Our Bridge to Kindergarten students had a great time with us this summer. See you soon, Bees!

Administrator Avenue

Dear Bee Families,

As you may have read last week, Dr. Reid sent information regarding teacher staffing in the county.  The teacher/staff shortage has had a major impact at HES and many other schools across the district.  97% of the district being staffed does not equate to 97% of an individual school nor does it include other vacancies beyond teachers that are crucial to the functioning of a school.

Since April, we have attended all the county job fairs, we have reached out to universities and other professional networks, and we have contacted retirees.  Those efforts have yielded great results and closed our staffing gaps significantly, however, we do still have a couple of vacancies.

As we write this, we are still interviewing with the goal of having all vacancies filled. If we are unable to fill these positions by the first day of school, we are working to have long term subs who are certified. Currently, we have two Special Education teachers, 2nd grade Spanish Immersion teacher, classroom monitors and Administrative Assistant vacancies. Yes, our beloved Mrs. Goodwin is retiring and we will miss her dearly. Please feel free to let your social network know that we are hiring!

If you have been to our school lately you may have noticed additional security cameras. The Office of Safety and Security along with the Office of Facilities has installed several outdoor cameras in our continued efforts to ensure staff and student safety at HES.

We would like to thank all of our summer school staff for making learning fun and meaningful this summer. Also, our custodial team who continues to work long days to ensure our building is clean and ready for everyone to return in three weeks.

Lastly, we are scheduling all of our Back to School events. Be on the lookout for grade-level play dates, the Welcome Back Bus Tour, and our Back to School Bash. We will also have an orientation for all new families on the day of our Back to School Bash.

As always, we are a team. Please let us know what questions you might have.

Warmly,

Candace J. Hunstad         Elizabeth Baxter          Greg Brotemarkle

Free and reduced

Families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch for the 2022-23 school year. Breakfast and lunch are no longer free for all students without submitting an application.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application ten days prior to the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Please know that you are also helping Herndon Elementary when we are able to accurately record our school’s needs based on Free and Reduced Price Meal application numbers, as funds are distributed to schools based on these numbers. These funds allow us to provide our children with an equitable opportunity to thrive. At HES we use these funds to provide additional teachers that help close achievement gaps and increase rigor for all students. We also provide parent resources, supplies, family engagement opportunities such as Math and Literacy Night, and early intervention opportunities for our earliest learners.

Watch your email and our website for more information. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online. If you have questions, need a paper copy, or need assistance with the Free and Reduced-Price Meals application, please contact the front office at 703-326-3100. We look forward to supporting you.
