Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year! From left to right: Ms. Patty Hibner, Assistant Principal and Dr. Kelly Sheers, Principal
t’s hard to believe that the start of a new school year is just a 10 days away, with the first day of school being Monday, August 22. It is our pleasure to officially welcome you and your children “back to school.” We hope that everyone in the West Springfield community is enjoying the summer season. While the students have been away, the school has been a busy place. Classrooms and hallways are polished and gleaming, new supplies are arriving, and the teachers and staff are busy preparing for a successful return to school. We are excited for a new school year!
New to WSES? This FAQ page 2-Page Handbook is a great resource for many as well as our parent handbook online. If you have questions regarding your transition to WSES, our family liaison, Karen Lathrop, is a valuable resource to you.
Families, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources At WSES, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://westspringfieldes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources
Included on our website is a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or James Koontz, School-based Technology Specialist, at jhkoontz@fcps.edu if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
Changes to Medication Administration Management This school year, FCPS is changing our medication protocols to help ensure the safety of our medication administration management in Fairfax County Public Schools. These changes include:
-
Any time you drop off or pick up a medication in the health room, a Medication Delivery/Pick Up Form will be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian and the School Health Aide or FCPS staff member. This form will document that all required authorizations are complete, and the number of pills or amount of medication accepted/returned. A copy of the form will be given to the parent/guardian and school administrator.
- Medications received will be verified to ensure the description of the medication on the container/packaging matches the medication in the container.
-
All medications must be in the original pharmacy container. Over the counter (OTC) medications must be in an unopened original container. It will no longer be acceptable for parents/guardians to bring in refills from home and place them into the container currently in the health room.
- Only a 30-day supply of medications should be brought to school. No more than 100 tablets or pills of OTC medication should be brought to school.
- All requirements outlined in FCPS Regulation 2102, First Aid, Emergency Treatment and Administration of Medication for Students, continue to apply.
- Please contact our Public Health Nurse Gabi Veatch if you need assistance or have questions.
Student Arrival and Dismissal Procedures Please review our online parent handbook for important information and details regarding student arrival and dismissal.
Final Class Placements Final class placements for all students in grades K-6 will be communicated on Wednesday, August 17.
School Immunizations School may be out for summer, but now is the time for your child to catch up on school immunizations! Check out the list of Virginia’s required school immunizations and make your doctor appointments now before the August rush or visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of child immunization clinics.
Free and Reduced Lunch Requirements For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students ended, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.
Eligible families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.
Bus Information and ParentVue Access Access your SIS ParentVue account, to see your child’s transportation assignments and intent on the “Student Info” tab. Transportation assignments for the first day of school, August 22, 2022, will be available on August 09, 2022. The office of transportation may make changes to the bus schedule up to August 19, 2022.
For more information about the SIS ParentVUE account, please visit the FCPS Website: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps/sis-parent-account-overview
