Federal Impact Aid Forms

On Tuesday, October 25th, your child will receive the annual Federal Impact Aid Form from their 3rd period Major Time teachers.  Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey back to your students’ Major Time teacher on October 27th

If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  Please sign/date at the bottom and return to school with your child.  All forms are due and will be collected during Major Time with a FINAL due date of Friday, November 4th.  All results are confidential.

Thank you for your prompt return of Federal Impact Aid forms as the county requests a 100% participation rate.

Red Ribbon Week and Opioids Lesson

To help combat the growing Opioid crisis, we are taking a proactive approach to educating our students and families.  We will share this lesson in Major Time November 1, 2022.  Please take the time to review this lesson and email our Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist, Ms. Mohaupt at ejmohaupt@fcps.edu with any questions you might have. Please also visit this FCPS website for more information.  Additionally, we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week in the following ways:

Virginia College Application Week

Virginia College Application Week (VCAW) is here.  Seniors from across the Commonwealth of Virginia will be applying to colleges next week October 24th - 28th, 2022 for free.  On this Google Site you will find information about all of the schools  that are participating as well as some helpful resources on the Common and Coalition Application.

The Student Services Team at Mount Vernon has worked to give our students the opportunity to also attend a college and military information fair, get support with their college applications, and participate in on-site admissions. Students may register by clicking on the link below: https://forms.gle/CHkNdQNWLAUSi3qr6 or contact their school counselor for more information.

Seniors should check their emails for a detailed plan of all VCAW sessions, dates and colleges who will offer on site admissions.  A similar email will be sent to all senior parents on Monday.

Below is the list of colleges who will provide a VCAW fee waiver code.  Seniors can come to the Aux gym or contact their school counselor, October 25th -28th to receive the fee waiver code.

Student Activities

Varsity Field Hockey opened playoffs with a 4-1 win over Falls Church.  They fell in the semifinals 1-0 in OT to Annandale.  They will host Regionals on Tuesday vs West Potomac at 6:30pm.  Please come out and support the Majors in their playoff quest.  Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults.

Volleyball will open district playoffs on Monday at Thomas Jefferson HS at 6:30pm.  Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.  Please try to come out and support Volleyball.

Football will play at Edison on Friday October 21 at 7:00pm.  We will have senior night at our last home game next Friday vs Hayfield.  Seniors in football, cheer, band, and JROTC will all be recognized prior to the game.  Tickets are $5.

Cross Country will have district finals at Burke Lake on Thursday October 27.  The top 4 teams will move on to regional competition.  Good luck Majors.

Success is often measured in different ways:  Last week we had our final regular season cross country meet.  Our Boys Team finished the meet in 3rd place.  Nearly every runner set a personal record.  Their reaction upon finding out their team finish was a celebration.  You’d have thought Mount Vernon had won a State Championship!  After the meet an Annandale runner failed to show up at the finish line. As darkness set in, their team began a search effort to find him for nearly an hour after the race.  Eventually, the student was safely found miles off the course, having taken a wrong turn and just continuing on. Our Mount Vernon athletes insisted on remaining on site to assist when all the other teams departed. They even broke down the race official’s timing gear and returned it since he had left it behind to assist in the search with his vehicle. I was proud of our runners and the Annandale coach was enormously grateful/complementary about our terrific young adults.  The point is we are not only building athletes, we are building great people.  Good job Majors.
