1.  From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the Chantilly HS Community:

I hope you are doing well. As summer progresses and the start of school nears, I plan to send periodic updates to help keep everyone aware of what’s happening at CHS and how to best prepare for the upcoming school year. First, I’m very pleased to share that CHS has been named a Green Flag School! This means that Chantilly HS was recognized by National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA program for exceptional achievement in educating for sustainability, improving the environmental footprint of the school grounds, facility, and curriculum. We are only the second high school in Fairfax County to achieve this distinction. Special thanks to science teacher Michele Gates for her leadership of our Eco-School initiatives. Please see the announcement below for details. I’m also pleased to share that special education teacher Sonny Romine has been named our Dean of Students for the 2022-2023 School Year. In this role, Sonny will be leading our academic,  wellness and attendance efforts. Sonny is a graduate of CHS and brings a great deal of energy, dedication and knowledge to our administrative team. Finally, please see below for some other important updates.

Best Wishes,

Scott Poole

2.  Chantilly High School Awarded Eco-Schools USA Green Flag for Exceptional Achievement in Educating for Sustainability

Chantilly High School was recognized by National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA program for exceptional achievement in educating for sustainability, improving the environmental footprint of the school grounds, facility, and curriculum. Chantilly is only the second high school in Fairfax County that has earned the Green Flag. Chantilly High School is one of 308 Eco-Schools in Virginia, and the 35th to receive the prestigious Green Flag, the Eco-Schools highest honor.

The Eco-Schools USA program is based on the commitment and work of student-driven teams dedicated to issues such as reducing waste and consumption, climate resiliency, and environmental justice using audits, action plans, and other educational resources. The Chantilly Green Flag Award concentrated on the Biodiversity, Energy, and School-Yard Habitat pathways.

To receive the Green Flag, Chantilly’s students and faculty tackled a host of sustainability initiatives that began with forming an Eco-Action team; auditing environmental focus areas; and engaging and building community. These steps led to the creation of a pollinator garden, an outdoor classroom, planting over a dozen native trees, and conducted an energy audit with student-formulated recommendations to reduce energy use, all designed to raise environmental awareness, connect students to the natural world, improve the school’s environmental footprint, and increase student engagement, while saving money for the school.

3.  2022-23 School Year to Start on August 22

The first day of school for the 2022-23 school year will be Monday, August 22. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

4.  Summer Meal Service

No-cost summer meals will be served to students enrolled in summer school at all FCPS summer school locations this year.

Summer Meal Kits will be offered on Tuesdays at several sites beginning June 14 and ending August 8. Meal kits contain seven days of breakfast and lunch items packed in bulk.

The meal kits will be available for pick up Tuesday mornings. All meals are available at no-cost to FCPS students and children 18 years of age and under. Visit our Meals for Students website for more details on pick up locations and times.

5.  Complete Your Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications This Summer

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.
