Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members: headshot

This will be the final Principal’s Newsletter for the 2021-22 school year.  As we close the school year and my first year as principal of Justice High School, it is a good time to reflect on what we have achieved, update you on some important changes, and look forward to an even more successful 2022-2023 school year!

Firstly, I thank you all for your continued support of our Justice High School community. I have enjoyed meeting so many of you during our sporting, performing arts, and family night events.  Working in partnership with all of you, I am proud of the heights to which we as a staff have been able to lead your children. I look forward to continuing this partnership to ensure our Justice students achieve success in all areas.

Without us working together we couldn’t have achieved so much. Below are some of the key achievements of this year, however there are many more! These experiences could not occur without the endless energy, skills, and devotion of the Justice High School staff.  I’m forever grateful for this amazing and incredible group of professionals. I am confident that the hard work of our students and high degree of support from the parents/families will really pay off and put us on the map to being an outstanding provider of education for students enrolled at Justice High School.

Learning Environment & Curriculum

Our student enrollment increased tremendously this school year, which required us to be creative with classroom spaces.  We are still anticipating construction of our new addition, which will be a fantastic learning resource with bigger, airy, and brighter classrooms. Other improvements are the main office, main hall, and other areas which celebrates the Justice High School namesakes, diversity, and student talent of our campus emblazoned on the walls and in the hallway encasings.

I am exceptionally proud of our increased intervention efforts and “IB for All” initiatives. I really believe we have the potential to support our students to achieve highly in all subject areas; something that will surely set them up for success in college, career, and beyond!

Attendance, Conduct, and Mentoring

We have made great strides in improving the attendance of our students and have achieved a substantial amount of success, despite our pandemic hardships. Thank you all for making sure your child attends every day and is here on time. We will continue to address our attendance goals with robust interventions and celebratory measures. I have also been delighted with the overall behavior of our students and can say that many visitors to the school comment on the calm and purposeful atmosphere we are creating. We look forward to addressing our challenges and continuing working with our students, parents, and staff and receive input about how they would like to see the school develop.

We are also exploring ways to increase our mentoring efforts, whether it is to help with learning or with other issues, such as how to have healthy and happy friendships. I am so proud of the young people we have and really admire the way they contribute to our community. As Principal, I have been so pleased at our efforts to meet the needs of all students in a school which is ambitious for their future and able to remove barriers to learning.

Student Activities

It is important that our students have an enjoyable, enriching time at school. This year, we have held a number of sporting events, student-led demonstrations, and fine arts productions, and diversity celebrations including the brilliant ‘International Night’ event; a huge thank you to Mrs. Buffenbarger and the SGA Leadership students! I am very keen for your child to participate in after-school and enrichment activities to support our goals of “educating the whole child”.  A full menu of what we have to offer will be made available to you throughout the summer via our Student Activities News You Choose and when we return in August for the 2022-2023 school year.

Farewells

Of course, it is the time in the year when we sadly say goodbye to some staff. This year, three long-standing members of our campus; Ms. Jenny Kresse-Rodriguez, Ms. Toni Maples, and Mr. Patrick Kelly are retiring after serving our Justice HS community for a number of years. We will miss them and thank them for all their hard work and dedication to the school.  We also have several staff who are moving on to other schools in FCPS, other districts, and/or leaving the education field for a variety of personal reasons.  We wish all our departers every success in the future.

Thanks to all

Special thanks to our PTSA who, as usual, went above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever was necessary to add to our students’ school experience.  I would also like to thank our FCPS school board, senior leadership, and Region 2 team for all their hard work and tireless championing of our school. I would also like to thank all the staff – both teaching and support staff – who make this school the terrific school it is and a wonderful place of work and learning.

As the new academic year approaches, I am excited about our journey to moving the needle and making excellence a part of our daily habits at Justice High School. Your partnership in this journey is extremely critical and I look forward to continuing to work with you and providing our students with an education they can be proud of.

A final word to our Class of 2022 and continuing Justice High School students:  Thank you for all your hard work throughout the school year.  I am so honored to be your principal; you make me proud to be the leader of the Wolfpack.  You keep me living with purpose, working with passion, and young at heart.  I am grateful for your joy, astute insights, and amazing talents.  Until next school year, keep making it a great day…..it’s the only way!
