WE DID IT….AGAIN!

Bee Parents and Families,

We would like to take this space to thank you for yet another incredibly challenging and immensely fulfilling school year. TOGETHER, we have navigated masks, distancing, vaccinations, quarantines, isolation, contact tracing, COVID notifications and massive sub shortages…all the while, TOGETHER we smiled, taught, nurtured, laughed, loved and LEARNED. Your children grew in more ways than just growing out of their shoes and clothes. They grew in their friendships and in navigating social situations. They grew as readers and mathematicians. They grew their interests in novel subject areas. They grew as inquirers and global citizens. They grew in kindness and maybe most of all, in their resilience to handle all that this world gives them.

We ask as we move into summer that you do a couple of things to continue to make this a place where every Bee belongs!:

  • Keep a close eye on your child’s emotional needs. The impacts of COVID are still revealing themselves and our students’ emotional well-being remains our top concern and priority.
  • Please provide lots and lots of ways and places where your child can pick up something to read. Please don’t make it a chore-make it fun with books, magazines, brochures, etc.. If you need more books for the summer, please reach out.
  • Please look out for one another and when one of our “neighbors” is in need, reach out. We pride ourselves in the family-like community we share and we will all go through times when need each other. If you know of a Herndon Elementary family in need, please reach out to Mrs. Hunstad. Our HES family can and will mobilize very quickly when needs arise.

For your continued grace and compassion and partnership, we are thankful. Have a wonderful, relaxing and fun summer.

Warmly,

Candace J. Hunstad           Elizabeth Baxter           Yaara Crane

Thank you PTA

and all of our Herndon ES volunteers

This year would not have been the same without our Herndon ES award winning PTA supporting us!  First, we would like to thank our PTA board, President Sara Murphy,  VP of Volunteers Jenny Kimsey, VP of Membership and HES IA Martina Willis, Secretary Lee Biear, and Treasurer Tara Reddy for their ideas, outstanding leadership, generosity, and countless hours.  Thank you to all those who supported them.  They are all parents who volunteer their time for the school, our staff, and students. They put on our Spring and Fall Book Fairs, our HES 60th Anniversary party, teacher appreciation week, etc.

Thank you to ALL of the volunteers at Herndon ES!  They are parents, former parents, grandparents, middle, high school, and college students, and  community members. You help our bees keep buzzing!

We would especially like to thank one of our parents, Nicole Wickenheiser.  Nicole has been an extremely active PTA member, former board member, and parent volunteer for over 10 years.  She has worked tirelessly, and with her last son graduating from HES, she just finished up co-chairing the 6th grade celebration and put on the 6th grade talent show.  If there was a PTA event, Nicole was somehow involved!

Nicole, we will miss you and good luck with your future endeavors.  "Once a Bee, always a Bee"!

Additional locations may be added in the weeks ahead.

Meal Kits will consist of 7 days of breakfast and lunch.

Last distribution is planned for August 8, with double meal kits offered this day.

All FCPS students (regardless of age) are eligible for free meals, as well as other county children that are eighteen (18) years and under. Parents/caregivers picking up meal kits for children should let staff know how many children's meals they need.

No cost meals (breakfast and lunch) will be available for all FCPS students attending FCPS summer school programs.

Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services at 703-813-4800 with any questions.

Visit our Meals for Students website for more details on pick up locations and times.

Complete Your Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications This Summer

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.

Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 2022-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.

Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Win Prizes With the Public Library Summer Reading Adventure; Starts June 10

The Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) summer reading program will take place June 10 to August 12. Children, teens, and adults can sign up now on Beanstack where they can track their summer reading.

Participants will have the chance to earn prizes when they read and complete activities. There are different challenges for preschoolers, K-5 students, teens, and adults.

Prizes will be awarded after the completion of Summer Reading Adventure. If you don't want to use Beanstack to log your reading, paper reading logs will be available beginning June 10 online and at your local library branch. Fill out your reading log and return it to your local library by August 12 to be eligible for prizes.

More information about the FCPL summer reading program is available online.
