Glasgow Community Gazette - June 5

Powell

Greetings!

We are excited about the 8th graders having their carnival style celebration during the school day. Please sign up with the PTA using THIS LINK if you want to attend and support from 12:30-2:15PM. Also, as a reminder Friday, June 10th is an early release day for the last day of school. We will send out a few more reminders, so families are aware. Also, here is the recording for this past week's PTA Meeting. This was the last PTA meeting of the year. Thank you for all the support!

Our end of the year grade level awards ceremonies were recorded. Here are the 6th and 7th Grade recordings from this past Thursday:

Our community acknowledges Juneteenth and commemorates the day in 1865 that word of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, effectively marking the end of slavery in the United States.  Also, in the month of June we recognize the valuable contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals across America, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ Americans in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice.

As a reminder: Families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for SY 22-23. For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. However, the extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year.

I encourage you to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application prior to the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer. Watch your email and our website for more information. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.

No-cost summer meals will be served at all FCPS summer school locations this year. Please visit the FCPS website for updated information during the summer.

If you have questions about the Free and Reduced-Price Meals program, the additional benefits your child may receive, or no-cost summer meals, please contact our Student Services Department at 703.813.8700. We are happy to help.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Greetings from Glasgow Middle School! Glasgow will host a 2-day summer institute for students on June 21st and June 22nd. This institute seeks to promote student’s interest in STEM based fields of study, reinforce classroom learning, build upon student’s Portrait of a Graduate skills, and expose students to higher level thinking routines that would typically be used in honors and advanced academic classes. All students are invited to attend. However, we must cap our institute at 100 students. Our 2-day institute is free of charge, and all students will receive breakfast and lunch. Preference will be given to students who are identified as young scholars and/or level IV students. Please note that transportation will not be provided at this time for the two day institute. After School Updates

Although the after school program has concluded for the year, I would like to thank our parents and students for participating in the after school program. We were able to continue clubs and activities in spite of the many health challenges we were presented with. As a staff, we are grateful for the relationships that were formed, lessons we learned together and the support of our parents and families. To that end, I wish our rising 9th graders continued success in high school and beyond. To our returning students, thank you for your participation and enthusiasm you brought to the after school program and we look forward to having you return next year.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Williams at gwilliams2@fcps.edu.
