Thoreau Matters
June 3, 2022
Dear Thoreau Families,
Welcome to the last week of the 2021-22 school year! I am very proud of your children for learning and growing while persevering through the continued impact of COVID and the social adjustments of returning to in-person learning. We are interested in hearing about how this school year has gone for students. You have an opportunity to provide your feedback on the FCPS Family Return to School Survey which you should have received via email. The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Legally Blond Jr. Opening night was a huge success and I am very proud of their hard work, enthusiasm and clear passion for bringing happiness to their audience!
Next week we look forward to honoring students selected for awards at our grade-level awards ceremonies. Parents of the recipients received an invitation last week. We also will be hosting an 8th grade celebration on Thursday and we know our students will enjoy making their final memories as Golden Eagles.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Teresa Khuluki
Principal
As we close out the end of the year, we wanted to let our students and families know that on Thursday, June 9th and Friday, June 10th, students should not be bringing backpacks to school. We ask that you remind your children about this as we approach these days. (If you have a 7th grade student who is returning their laptop on Thursday, June 9th, they may bring their backpack if they feel it is necessary in order to keep their laptop safe till it gets returned.).
For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced price meals for the 2022-23 school year.
Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meal application before the first day of the 22-23 school year. The online application will be available later this summer and accessible via the FCPS homepage.
Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes.

Student laptop collection will begin Monday, June 6. In preparation, please make sure your FCPSON laptops and chargers are clean. Remove any personal stickers and the residue they leave behind. Please turn in the FCPSON issued charger with your laptop (it has TMS FCPSON written on it; see pictures below). Wrap your power adapters neatly and plug them into your laptops. If you are missing your FCPSON issued power adapter, replacements may be purchased via MySchoolBucks. If students are attending a summer program, they will keep their laptop and turn in the device to TMS when it is over. Students keep the laptop sleeves as these will be used next year. If a rising 9th grader is attending a FCPS summer program, they will hold onto the Thoreau FCPSON device and turn it in to Thoreau as soon as the program completes. The Thoreau MS FCPSON device must be returned before they receive their FCPSON device from their new High School.
