In the month of June we recognize the valuable contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals across America, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ Americans in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice.

Lastly, FCPS has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases recently as the county has transitioned to the medium community level. Schools continue to apply layered prevention strategies to maintain a healthy work and learning environment. However, each of us has a responsibility to do our part to help keep ourselves, our students, and our colleagues safe.

Easy ways to “Do Your Part” include: staying up to date on vaccinations and boosters, considering when and where to choose to mask up, practicing good hygiene, and monitoring symptoms daily.

A single booster dose is now authorized for children ages 5-11, at least five months after completing a primary series with the Pfizer vaccine. Learn more about scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment or find a walk-in option on the Fairfax County Health Department’s website

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Greetings from Glasgow Middle School! Glasgow will host a 2-day summer institute for students on June 21st and June 22nd. This institute seeks to promote student’s interest in STEM based fields of study, reinforce classroom learning, build upon student’s Portrait of a Graduate skills, and expose students to higher level thinking routines that would typically be used in honors and advanced academic classes. All students are invited to attend. However, we must cap our institute at 100 students. Our 2-day institute is free of charge, and all students will receive breakfast and lunch. Preference will be given to students who are identified as young scholars and/or level IV students. Please note that transportation will not be provided at this time for the two day institute. To learn more and access the registration form, please visit this link: https://forms.gle/qyu4D9quxFK5mbGN6. If you have any specific questions, please reach out to Dr. Randolph at lwrandolph@fcps.edu.

IBMA Student Excellence Award in the amount of $500.00 was granted to Marium Gulzar for the MYP Programme.

  • Marium Gulzar (she/her) is a 6th grade student at Glasgow Middle School. Her family is originally from Pakistan,  but she was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia.   Marium  has been in the IB program since third grade as a PYP student and has always had a great passion for learning. Recently,  Marium developed an interest in coding and decided to join her school's coding program where she won the award for “Best Designed Website.”
  • Marium is also part of a journalism class where she helps write articles for her school's newspaper, the Panther Post.
  • In 5th grade, Marium decided to take action against a growing problem in our society: homelessness. She and a small group of other students collected items such as: food, clothing, toiletries, and then donated these items to shelters near them. They also educated their class as well as their community about the problem.

In her free time, Marium enjoys binge-watching some of her favorite shows, painting, baking, and making jewelry.

After School Updates

Although the after school program has concluded for the year, I would like to thank our parents and students for participating in the after school program. We were able to continue clubs and activities in spite of the many health challenges we were presented with. As a staff, we are grateful for the relationships that were formed, lessons we learned together and the support of our parents and families. To that end, I wish our rising 9th graders continued success in high school and beyond. To our returning students, thank you for your participation and enthusiasm you brought to the after school program and we look forward to having you return next year.

As a reminder, if you’re a rising 6th-8th grader, there are still spaces available for VIP Camp at Thoreau Middle School. If you’re interested in your student(s) participating in summer camp, please visit the link below to sign up for VIP Camp. Parent orientation will take place Tuesday, May 24th at 6:30.
