nyc

We have had an exciting week at Irving with so many positives, we just have to share!

  • On Friday, May 20, we welcomed rising 7th grade students from 3 of our feeder elementary schools. 8th grade student ambassadors served as guides for our visitors. We look forward to WSES school students visiting next week!
  • We successfully finished up SOL testing! Thank you to our amazing team for organizing all of the tests, makeup tests, and retake tests. We are so proud of our students and how much they have grown this year.
  • We kicked off our Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning yesterday! We have about 275 students participating in this exciting pilot. After 3-years of working on this pilot we are thrilled to finally be able to have these presentations. Students are doing great work and these presentations are 100% student driven opportunities for them to demonstrate their learning.
  • We held 3 beautiful concerts this week - first our Bands performed at WSHS on Monday, then a lively Chorus concert was held in our cafetorium on Wednesday, and we finished with sweet sounds from our Orchestra last night. Congratulations to our student performers and outstanding teachers!
  • Last but not least, we celebrated with over 250 West Springfield High School seniors as they walked the halls of Irving one last time before graduation next Tuesday.

So much good happens in our halls every day and we are grateful to you for the support you have shown our students and staff.

8th Grade Celebration

Friday, June 3 from 6:00-8:00 pm

  • The purpose of the 8th grade celebration is to have fun and celebrate one last time as a class with our 8th grade students before they head out for the summer and on to high school.
  • Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend.
  • The 8th grade celebration is NOT a formal event
  • Students should be comfortable to dance and likely take a lot of pictures in our step and repeat section. In previous years, students have worn a pair of slacks and a collared shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required or recommended for this event (often high heels are taken off within about 10 minutes of arriving…).
  • Students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend.
  • We will be utilizing outdoor spaces for the event - fingers crossed for good weather!
  • We need volunteers to make this celebration a success - please see the link below to volunteer as a chaperone for the 8th Grade Celebration. Thank you in advance for helping us make this celebration a successful event for our students.

Laptop Collection

Students will return their FCPS-issued Dell laptop and power cord on June 6 & 7 during science classes. For students who are absent on collection days, we will have an additional collection at the beginning of the school day on June 8. We would appreciate if you could check in with your child before June 6 to ensure the following:

  • Please remove any stickers that have been added to the laptop before returning. Note: please do not apply pressure to remove sticker residue, as this could damage the laptop. Any remaining residue can be removed by our tech team.
  • Please check that the power cord your child brings to school is the Dell power cord given with the laptop. This is the only power cord that will be accepted. If a power cord is lost, families can pay the replacement cost ($23) on MySchoolBucks.com and students can show the emailed receipt when returning the laptop.

Once the laptop is returned, a receipt will be sent to your child’s Google (@fcpsschools.net) email. If the power cord is not returned with the laptop, the emailed receipt will indicate that. Thank you!

Library News

This school year is coming to an end quickly.  All library materials are due in one week on Friday, May 27 which is next week.  Overdue notices were sent this week to both students and parents.  Thank you to the students who returned their books promptly. All borrowed materials become overdue after May 27.  Start looking for those long forgotten library books now, and return them to the mailbox outside of the library doors or in the slot inside the library.  If you are still reading a book and do not finish it by May 27th, come and talk to Ms. Monk or Mrs. Gawalt.

The Readers Unite Club met one last time celebrating a year of reading with a party and literary games. We read 12 books this year.  Wow!

News from the PTA

PTA Meeting

This past Tuesday was our last PTA meeting. We reviewed the financial report, history of activities, end-of-year events, and held board elections. Congratulations to our incoming board officers: Robert Johnson - President, Katie Zeytoonian - Secretary, and Christy Whiteaker - Treasurer! Also, a huge thank you to the WSHS PTSA for providing a ton of useful information and tips and answering questions for our families with rising 9th graders.

Teacher Appreciation Events

On Monday, June 6 we will distribute bundtlettes (mini-Bundt cakes) from Nothing Bundt Cakes to our amazing teachers! We are looking for volunteers to help distribute them to teachers during the afternoon.
