WPHS Athletics Reminders and Fundraisers

Sports Physical Night

June 7th availability - Wolverine Parents, it’s time to start planning for the 2022-23 high school sports seasons. The first step for students to be eligible to participate with any West Potomac sports teams, including tryouts, workouts and green days, is to complete a sports physical on a VHSL Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE) form.  The sports physicals for the current school year will expire on June 30th2022.  The West Potomac High School Athletic Training Program will be offering sports physicals at WPHS on Tuesday June, 7th.  The completed physical will stay on file at school and be good for all sports participation both in and out of season for the 2022-23 school year.  This event is a fundraiser for the WP Athletic Training Program and proceeds go to support student athletes in all sports.  The cost of the physical is $50 and all students must register online.  Register now while there is space available.

Volunteers:  We are always looking for medical and non-medical volunteers to assist us for the event. If you are interested in helping out (and will be available from 5 – 8pm on 6/7) click on this link to register as a volunteer. You will be given more information as we get closer to the night.

Understanding Test-Optional Admissions - Many more colleges have gone test-optional as a temporary response to COVID and are treating this as a “pilot program” before determining whether to make it a permanent policy. Check college admissions pages for policy changes as this plays out.

Test-optional does not mean test-blind! Test-blind schools do not accept or consider test scores at all. Test-optional means that SAT/ACT scores are not required to submit an application. This does not mean that the scores are not a factor in the admissions decision.

Do students really need to take an official SAT or ACT? For many, the answer is yes. Without the test, you may be eliminating an important asset in your college application. Strong scores can help show that you’re academically competitive or help earn merit aid (even at test-optional schools). Test-optional means you can choose whether you submit the scores as part of your application.

Our PTSA would like to share this message from the National PTSA News:

Ways You Can Take Action on Gun Violence and Resources to Care for Your Mental Health

The mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday is the deadliest school shooting since 2012, when 26 children and adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.  Our association has challenged Congress over and over again to address this issue. Parents are scared to send their children to school, teachers are worried about how to protect their students, and our children are now singing new lyrics to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star:

"Lockdown, lockdown, Lock the door

"Shut the lights off, Say no more

"Go behind the desk and hide

"Wait until it's safe inside"

We are, as civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer once said, sick and tired of being sick and tired. But we are not going to go numb. PTA has been the conscience of this country on issues affecting children and youth for over 125 years, and we're never going to stop advocating for every child with one united voice.

We urge you to join us in demanding change—and to take care of yourself and your family, too.
