Glasgow Community Gazette - May 22

Powell

Greetings!

We have finished our SOL schedule for 2022 and I am so happy for our students and teachers with the growth we have all made for our school community! Our students have worked really hard! Also we are excited about continuing our social and emotional strategies within our SEL block like working with the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program! Please see the images below. “Teddy” has helped our students in so many ways within communication skills, reduced anxiety and problem solving. We are looking to expand the program next year!

Now that FCPS has transitioned back to a more typical school experience, the school division is interested in hearing from parents/caregivers about how the school year has gone for their students. You will have an opportunity to provide your feedback on our Family Return to School Survey which will open Tuesday, May 31, and close Friday, June 10.

The survey is being administered by the FCPS Office of Research and Strategic Improvement, which provides objective research and data-based information back to the school division’s leadership. The survey is part of the office’s continuing evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on our school division. We encourage all FCPS parents/caregivers to respond to the survey and share their experiences whether positive or negative. The information you and other families provide will be used, along with other data, to inform FCPS leadership about the return to five days a week of in-person instruction, and support FCPS’ efforts to make improvements that support schools, students, and staff. It will also be included in ESSER III reporting.

Mental wellness is key to student success. The pandemic has added to mental health challenges facing children of all ages. Join us in “Wear Green Day of Action” this Friday to call attention to this important issue. For resources to support the students in your life, visit our website.

As a reminder, the 8th grade PBIS Field Day celebration will be on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022, during the school day, and the activities will be moon bounces, sports activities, music and games. We are partnering with the PTA for this event. We want students to have fun with their classmates during the last week of school! Finally, we have let our students know that we want all of them to attend the grade level field day celebrations for 6th-8th, but they will not be permitted to attend if they engage in serious misconduct during 4th quarter.  Serious misconduct includes but is not limited to:

  • Fighting
  • Skipping class
  • Attendance

Please let our team know if you have any questions. Thank you to the PTA for all their support for all our middle schoolers. Let's have an awesome week!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

After School Updates

As we approach May 26th, our last day of the 2021-2022 After School program;  I would like to thank our parents and students for allowing your student(s) to participate in the after school program. We were able to continue clubs and activities in spite of the many health challenges we were presented with. As a staff, we are grateful for the relationships that were formed, lessons we learned together and the support of our parents and families. To that end, I wish our rising 9th graders continued success in high school and beyond. To our returning students, thank you for your participation and enthusiasm you brought to the after school program and we look forward to having you return next year.
