Thoreau Matters

May 20, 2022

Dear Thoreau Families,

As you know, COVID-19 cases have been increasing in Fairfax County and in schools. Here at Thoreau, we have seen an increase in cases and continue to encourage everyone to take the steps they feel necessary to stay safe and healthy. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students’ home if sick and get them tested to stop further spread from occurring. Several families have reached out asking to me to stop sending the daily notification emails. We have been transparent about how the pandemic is impacting our students all year. We are required to share daily COVID-19 notifications whenever there is a confirmed positive case in our school. This information is provided to make our school community aware of the current situation and be able to make informed decisions about how to protect themselves. I appreciate the patience, support, and understanding you have shown throughout this school year as we adjust our response to the pandemic.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

Principal

8th Grade Celebration

The 8th Grade End of Year Celebration will be taking place at school on Thursday, June 9th from 12:45pm-2:15pm (7th period). 8th grade students will be provided a fun and exciting opportunity to celebrate their time here at Thoreau with their fellow 8th grade classmates. The celebration will include various activity stations such as field games (soccer, football, hula hoop, corn hole, spikeball, etc.), ice cream station (ice cream will be provided for students by administration), dunk tank (Thoreau approved staff are the only ones allowed in the dunk tank) & a selfie station in front of our very own student painted Thoreau cloth backdrop. Friendly reminder to 8th grade parents/guardians that as Principal Khuluki announced that from May 17th until the day of the celebration on June 9th, any 8th grade student that receives an ISS (in-school suspension), out of school suspension or more than three unexcused tardies will not be allowed to participate in the celebration. As June 9th gets closer, further information for these affected 8th grade students will be communicated home if applicable.

For Thursday June 9th, while the 8th grade students are attending the celebration outside on the field and blacktop, 7th grade students will remain in their 7th period class as normal and participate in individual class end of year activities with their 7th period teacher.

We are looking forward to ending the year strong and getting to celebrate our graduating 8th grade students!

Spring SOL Testing

SOL Scores:

For all students who took one or more SOLs this spring, scores will be available in SIS test history by late June. Teachers have shared student scores with students as the data has become available.

Retakes:

The Virginia Board of Education allows middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year.  Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing). All parents have been contacted if their child is eligible for a retake. If permission was given, students will complete those retakes on the dates below.

Laptop Returns

Student laptop collection will begin Monday, June 8. In preparation, please make sure your FCPSON laptops and chargers are clean. Remove any personal stickers and the residue they leave behind. Please turn in the FCPSON issued charger with your laptop (it has TMS FCPSON written on it; see pictures below). Wrap your power adapters neatly and plug them into your laptops. If you are missing your FCPSON issued power adapter, replacements may be purchased via MySchoolBucks. If students are attending a summer program, they will keep their laptop and turn in the device to TMS when it is over. Students keep the laptop sleeves as these will be used next year.
