May 20, 2022
Dear Fairfax Families,
Happy Friday! We are in full testing mode with AP exams, SOLs, and senior final exams happening this week. The last final exam and last day of school for seniors is Tuesday, May 24.
We are pleased to announce that for this year’s Senior Grad Walk on May 25th, we will be expanding the number of schools students will visit. All students will visit Katherine Johnson Middle School. Then, students will go on one of two routes: Route 1 will visit KJMS, Providence, Eagle View, and Daniel’s Run; route 2 will visit KJMS, Greenbriar East, and Willow Springs. Students need to report to Fairfax between 10:00 am and 10:15 am. The buses will leave Fairfax promptly at 10:30 am. Registration for the FHS Grad Walk is now closed. Students that have signed up to participate will receive an email in their student fcpsschools.net account on Monday, May 23rd. Parents will also receive an email. Please check your SPAM folder!
I am excited to share that over 120 students participated in the SPIRIT program this past Monday. The SPIRIT program, which is supported by the Community Relations Service within the Department of Justice, recognizes the importance of student voice. It was an opportunity for our students to have honest conversations, to identify concerns, and to develop resolutions. The work that was begun on Monday will continue into the new school year. FHS has partnered with the George Mason University’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution to support a Student Equity Stakeholder Committee. Today over twenty five students joined Dr. Julie Shedd from GMU to learn about the Stakeholder Committee and to provide feedback on priorities and areas of concern that the Stakeholder Committee should focus on. The vast majority of students who joined Dr. Shedd today participated in the SPIRIT program on Monday. Please be sure to check out this fantastic article about the FHS SPIRIT program.
Last Saturday we had over 500 students dance the night away at the Great Gatsby themed prom at State Theatre. A big shout out to Junior Class Sponsors Anna Weaver and Mike Barbee for the many hours they put into making sure this was a night to remember for our juniors and seniors.
Congratulations to freshman Venki Srinevasan who is the Patriot District Runner-Up in boys singles tennis. Venki and fellow freshman, Iden Ziamanesh, were also the District Runner-Up in doubles competition! Both of our young tennis players start the Occoquan Region Individual tennis competition today at 3:30pm. Our boys team tennis opened the Region Team tennis yesterday and defeated Mt. Vernon, 5-0! Good luck to our girls tennis team who travels today to TJHSST to start the Region Team tennis competition and good luck to our track team who will compete in day 2 of the Patriot District Track meet tomorrow starting at 10am. If you are looking for something to do tonight, I strongly suggest you travel to West Springfield HS who is hosting the Patriot District Soccer finals where both our girls and boys teams will be competing for a district title! Girls kick-off is at 5:30pm and the boys follow at 7:30pm ~ It’s a WHITE OUT!
The Orchestra, Band, and Choir presented fantastic concerts this week, each showcased a variety of music and highlighted our talented seniors. Before concluding the Choir concert, the Rotary Club of Fairfax recognized choral student Andrea Canenguez for winning 3rd place in the Rotary District Music contest.
As I’m sure you know, COVID-19 cases have been increasing in Fairfax County and in schools. Here at FHS we have seen a significant increase in cases and continue to encourage everyone to take the steps they feel necessary to stay safe and healthy. Please have conversations with your children about how they can do their part. There are so many wonderful activities ahead of us and I don’t want anyone to miss them due to having to be home to isolate.
I appreciate the patience, support, and understanding you have shown throughout this school year as we adjust our response to the pandemic.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Maureen

Spring Attendance Reminders
Welcome to Spring and our final weeks before the summer break! We need to clarify a few things in our attendance policy in order for these final few weeks to run smoothly.
Early Dismissal/Check Out From School
- Please send in a note with your student to take the the Attendance Office (L103) OR fill out the electronic attendance form found on the FHS website.
- Once the attendance office receives the note or form, we will provide the student with a pink check out pass that they can show their teacher to get out of class.
- Students must sign out in the Attendance Office, L103 in order to have the remainder of the day excused.
- Students returning to school after signing out must sign back in at the Attendance Office, L103, before returning to class.
- We recommend allowing at least an hour’s notice to complete the process and send for your student. Providing the school with less time may result in delays with releasing your student.
- Requests to excuse students who have already left campus will not be honored.
Students who feel unwell during the day
- If your student contacts you during the school day about not feeling well, please tell them to go to the clinic
- Students who begin to feel unwell during the school day, must be excused through the clinic not the attendance office.
Prearranged Absences
- Absences for travel, competitions etc must be prearranged to be excused
-
Pre-arranged absence forms can be picked up in the sub school offices (A114, D127) or the attendance office (L103).
- FHS strongly discourages missing the last week of school; if it is unavoidable, this absence must be prearranged immediately.
