From The Principal

Family,

This has been such a whirlwind of a week, and at the same time, a very exciting and enjoyable week.  We had a week of SOLs and AP tests, along with just trying to work toward the closing out of the year.  But before I get into that, I want to go back a couple of weeks and share an event that needs to be shared.

On April 30th, the Best Buddies Club of South County joined other high schools, companies and organizations in the Washington DC area for a Friendship Walk.

Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Led by our lead CAT B teacher Mr. Walter Bagwell, students met at the Metro station to join the walk The students and staff enjoyed themselves and as a parent of a special needs child, I was encouraged by the results of this effort.  Walter Bagwell organized the group and woke up early on a Saturday when most teachers take a rest.  Heartfelt thanks go out to Mr. Bagwell and the rest of the staff and the Best Buddies students for rallying a group of teenagers to do the impossible!

Now back to this week.  I was fortunate to be able to close out the rest of our Senior Night celebrations and congratulate our Seniors and their Families on a great four years of Family!  I even was able to go over to the Greenspring Community to be a part of their Scholarship Awards ceremony.  We had 7 students who were recognized and each of them were awarded a $10,000 scholarship.  It was a great ceremony and I was honored to participate.

On Saturday, May 14th South County High School Crew boats competed in the second weekend of state competition, and our student-athletes took home another 1st place finish.   SoCo Crew also took home two 2nd place finishes and one 3rd place finish.    So now we'll have a second Virginia State championship trophy we'll be able to stand up and put in the school display case. 49 different Virginia high schools came to Sandy Run Park from as far away from Norfolk and Charlottesville, plus of course Loudon, Fairfax, and Prince William counties.  We are so proud of the accomplishments our crew team has earned!

Lastly, I went to the play this week put on by our Theatre students and I was completely blown away by the talent that has continued to grow and flourish as a result of the effort and dedication put in by our students, teachers, and Families.  I see our students in the hallway all the time, but for some reason, they don’t walk around talking to me or their peers in song!  I wonder why.  But I could have listened to our performers sing and act all night long!  And the big reveal of their college destinations almost brought tears to my eyes.  Amazing!  I hope you had and took the opportunity to see the play.  It was so very worth the cost of admission!

I continue to remind you to ensure that you are staying up to date with your child’s grades and progress.  The best way to do this is to regularly check in through your ParentVue account which will allow you to see your child’s gradebook which is as live as it can be.  This also allows you to be able to have knowledgeable conversations with teachers and your child in the event you need to.

I want to also remind you that the number of positive COVID cases have been on the rise as of late and we have to ensure that we are doing all that we can to mitigate any spread.  Please have the conversations with your children about what they can do to do their part.  I don't want anyone to miss out on any activities due to having to be home isolating.

Well that is it for this week.  I wish each of you a safe and restful remainder of the weekend.  Thank you for your continued support and kind words and thoughts.  Take care of yourselves and continue to be safe.  #OneStallion
