For the second year, Falls Church Academy Medical Assistant (MA) students have had the opportunity to assist Public Health Nurses at various FCPS elementary, middle and high schools by providing vision and hearing screenings to K-12 students. Before the students provided this support at the schools, Public Health Nurse Julie Smith trained all MA students in the proper techniques for using the Snellen Acuity Vision Chart and the Audiometer for hearing. Each school has different versions of these tools so students were cross trained on the various instruments to meet the same goal. In addition to learning these skills, students learned how to screen students of all ages, even their peers. They learned professionalism, charting and appropriate medical attire.
Public Health Nurses mentioned there are 100’s of students they need to screen which is almost impossible for them to complete on their own. In fact, Janet Stein, Public Health Nurse serving McLean High School said “we screened over 500 tenth graders!! If I had to sum them all up with one phrase, it would be “Grace under pressure”. Another said that each one of the students was “kind, courteous, competent, eager, ready to work, willing to take direction, and absolutely fantastic! They have worked so hard, and are a bright, motivated bunch of students!!” Some of the nurses had the chance to talk to the MA students supporting them about their future college and career plans and offered their mentoring support toward nursing and other medical fields.

On Wednesday, September 21 students from all Health and Medical Science courses at Falls Church Academy were invited to a HOSA Kickoff event during each period that day. Elissa Press, Student Vice President of Virginia HOSA and Laura Truong, Region 3 and 4 Student Vice President, spoke to the students about the benefits of joining HOSA and what to expect in the schedule for this academic year. Each class has since held elections and has named the President, Vice President, Secretary and Historian to represent their class. The Academy plans to hold a Falls Church Academy HOSA competition in the coming months to prepare the students planning to compete at the State HOSA level.

Although Falls Church High School is under construction, Falls Church Academy has managed to carve out a great interim space for students to learn hands-on medical skills in the Academy Lab. Here the students will learn proper medical hygiene, simulated medical events using a simulation mannequin, medical equipment, anatomy and physiology terminology and capturing of basic vital signs, among other skills. “Although we are looking forward to our new space and permanent medical lab, we are grateful to have a space where our students can practice new skills.”
