Belvedere News and Announcements

From the Administration

Dear Belvedere Family:

We had a fantastic staff appreciation week at Belvedere. The PTA’s generosity and the support of parent volunteers made every day so special for our staff.  Thank you for the wonderful lunch, pancake breakfast, bagels and doughnuts, and plants for the gardens. You made everyone feel special!

Last week was also the annual Jewelry Shop. The students had a wonderful time selecting a piece of jewelry for a special someone in their lives. Thank you to the PTA and to the parent volunteers who made this happen.

We are close to finishing SOL testing. This week students in grade three through five are completing the mathematics SOL test. Next week, students who missed a test, or who qualify for a retake, will complete testing. Thank you for your ongoing support.

We are looking forward to next school year being a more typical school year with parents in the building, classroom setup that allows for more collaboration, and many school activities. One of the considerations we have had over the years is ensuring students have leadership opportunities. To this end, we have created this document describing the student leadership opportunities we have available at Belvedere. We share these so that you can discuss them with your child and know which opportunities might conflict with others. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the staff members listed in the table.

Best regards,

Cecilia Vanderhye, Principal and Kelly Cabezas, Assistant Principal

Field Day on June 2

The end of the school year is sneaking up upon us. We will be having our end of year Field Day celebration on Thursday, June 2. This is our day to celebrate all the growth and success the students had in Physical Education this year.

Please be on the lookout for this flyer in your child’s Wednesday folder for more details. We will need some volunteers to make this day a huge success. If you are available please have your child bring the flyer back to Mrs. Novak or Mr. Bowles before May 20.

Thank you for all your help and support!

Techstravaganza at TJ this Saturday!

This Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will host their Techstravanagza event!

From hands-on activities to mind-blowing demonstrations, Techstravaganza inspires students to explore their passion for STEM. Past Techstravaganza exhibitors include Robotics for Youth, JEL Design Studios, and the American Society for Naval Engineers. This is a self-paced event, so students are free to visit whichever booths interest them! Students can look forward to raffles, merchandise, and goodie bags.

The event is open to all elementary and middle school students.  Students from Title I elementary schools (like Belvedere) will be offered lunch from noon to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria.

For more information, click here.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals Application

Although this school year breakfast and lunch meals are free to all students, we encourage families who believe their children might qualify for free and reduced-priced meals to apply for this program. Qualifying for free and reduced-priced meals has many added benefits, beyond the free meals. For elementary students, these include:

  • Reduced or waived musical instrument rental fee
  • Information about holiday assistance
  • Information about non-FCPS scholarships, classes and other non-FCPS educational related services
  • Pupil placement fees

There are also many other benefits and fee waivers that apply to students in middle school and high school (see this earlier letter from Dr. Brabrand).

Belvedere is a Title I school. A school’s Title I status is calculated based on the percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals. As a Title I school, Belvedere benefits from grant funds that support many school programs.

To apply for free and reduced-price meals, please go to this website.

We are here to support you. If you need help completing this application, please call the school.  We can help you over the phone or schedule a time for you to come to school and complete the application.

Thank you for considering this important matter.
