Glasgow Community Gazette - May 8

Powell

Greetings!

This weekend was spent hanging out with the family and watching my son at his soccer practice. SOL Testing at Glasgow is in full swing and our students took their Science 8 SOL and Reading 6 & 7 & 8 SOLs this past week. We are focused on growth from year to year and ensuring our students are proficient in the skills needed for their courses.

On Tuesday, May 17, Dr. Reid will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall, starting at 7 p.m. Details about this event have been shared in newsletters and directly via email to families.

Since the start of the pandemic, Fairfax County Public Schools has regularly reviewed and adjusted our health and safety guidance in alignment with recommendations from local, state and national health experts.

As a result, FCPS will be changing current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, your child may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, when your child has met the following criteria:

  • Student has completed at least five days of isolation; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
  • Student wears a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the 5-day isolation period, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to our StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). It also follows improving vaccination rates in the Fairfax Health District, as well as a continued community level of low in Fairfax County.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

This institute seeks to promote student’s interest in STEM based fields of study, reinforce classroom learning, build upon student’s Portrait of a Graduate skills, and expose students to higher level thinking routines that would typically be used in honors and advanced academic classes. All students are invited to attend. However, we must cap our institute at 100 students. Our 2-day institute is free of charge, and all students will receive breakfast and lunch. Preference will be given to students who are identified as young scholars and/or level IV students. Please note that transportation will not be provided at this time for the two day institute. Glasgow PTA News

STAFF APPRECIATION: Did you know there are over 200 teachers & staff at Glasgow? In honor of Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, the PTA provided lunch to staff on Thursday, held daily raffles, and gave candy bars to each staff member. THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who made these activities possible. We couldn't have done it without you. An even bigger THANK YOU to all of Glasgow's teachers & staff. We appreciate all you do for our children.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Our 8th grade celebration will be a carnival style field day on Wednesday, June 8. A shout out to the McLean branch of Bach2Rock (https://mclean.b2rmusic.com/), who has offered to DJ free of charge. They offer music & DJ classes and camps for all ages. We are excited to partner with them!
