From the Principal's Desk

May 6, 2022

Dear CWES Families,

I am writing to share some bittersweet news. I have accepted a position as Principal in Residence for FCPS’s Equitable Access to Literacy (EAL) plan beginning July 1, 2022. In my new role, I will be supporting FCPS’s division wide EAL plan by helping schools implement foundational literacy practices. While I am personally and professionally compelled to contribute to this important work, Canterbury Woods will always be my school home and I will dearly miss CWES staff, students, and families.

My passion for literacy instruction compels me to lend my expertise and experience to this important initiative, which stands to help FCPS students become better readers and writers for generations to come. In fact, our teachers’ efforts to strengthen literacy instruction at Canterbury Woods and the impact these efforts have had on student achievement have inspired me to support these efforts at other schools across the county.

As I complete my final weeks at Canterbury Woods, I am confident that our Region Assistant Superintendent, Ms. Rebecca Baenig, will work tirelessly to ensure that Canterbury Woods continues its path of excellence under highly capable leadership. The Region Office and FCPS Human Resources Department will begin the principal search process later this month. Ms. Baenig will be reaching out in the near future to invite you to a meeting to learn more about the principal selection process and ways you can provide written input regarding the skills, experience and leadership characteristics needed for our school.

I know our community has only grown stronger throughout the many transitions the pandemic has caused. I have every confidence that cWEs CAN come together to meet the challenges of this upcoming transition in leadership with unmatched resilience and commitment to students. I am proud of the community we have built together and thankful for the strong partnerships we have forged.

I am extraordinarily grateful to have served as your principal. My years at Canterbury Woods have been the most joyful of my career because of the relationships I have built with students, with staff, and with you. I know our Cougars will continue to thrive in our amazing school with your continued support; the WE in CWES depends on YOU. I am honored that you have entrusted your children into my care for the past four years – the support of this amazing community has meant the world to me.

With Gratitude,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L
