Reminder: Updated Isolation Procedures for Students Effective May 1

Since the start of the pandemic, Fairfax County Public Schools has regularly reviewed and adjusted our health and safety guidance in alignment with recommendations from local, state and national health experts.

As a result, FCPS will be changing current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, your child may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, when your child has met the following criteria:

  • Student has completed at least five days of isolation; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
  • Student wears a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the 5-day isolation period, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to our StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). It also follows improving vaccination rates in the Fairfax Health District, as well as a continued community level of low in Fairfax County.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe.

Asian American

In May people all over the United States celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the diverse perspectives, experiences, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders year-round, and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is one opportunity to honor these important stories.

Message from the Parklawn PTA

PTA

Mark your calendars for two big events that the PTA is organizing this month!

Bingo Night– We hope you can join us for this Parklawn tradition on Friday, May 20, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.! In addition to playing Bingo, you can enter a raffle for great prizes. Many prizes are generously donated by Parklawn teachers and staff, such as being librarian for a day, a private music lesson, and a lunch bunch with friends! Raffle tickets and Bingo cards will be available for purchase at the event.

PTA Meeting: Positivity Project Presentation– At the PTA meeting on May 26, we will welcome student representatives from the Positivity Project who will talk about this wonderful program that helps make Parklawn a more caring community!

PTA Meeting: Officer Elections– We will be holding elections for the Vice President and Treasurer positions at the PTA meeting on May 26. The Treasurer has responsibility for developing a budget for the PTA. They track donations, write checks, and organize an annual audit of the PTA’s financial records. The Treasurer also submits reports and dues payments to the Virginia State PTA and National PTA as required, and helps maintain our financial status as a nonprofit organization. The Treasurer will serve for two years (the 2022-2024 school years).

Please email parklawnpta@gmail.com if you have any questions about these PTA activities!

Positivity Project for May 7- May 13: Revisiting Integrity

P2

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Integrity. Integrity means you are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Integrity is vital to individual growth. It is correlated with a multitude of psychological well-being measures. Harmony in your feelings, thoughts, and actions makes you better able to personally grow and achieve goals. Authenticity and a lack of pretense make you more likable and trusted by others, meaning your relationships will benefit.

To practice and encourage the character strength of integrity with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week!
