Principal's Message

Dear South County Middle School Families,

This past week we celebrated Staff Appreciation Week. We are so grateful for the continued partnership and donations provided by the PTSO for Tuesday’s breakfast. If you follow me on twitter, you hopefully saw our taco bar, and other fun activities to honor our staff. Staff Appreciation Week is always one of the best weeks of the school year and it was a great opportunity for our community to thank our teachers and staff for their resiliency and commitment to students. The timing of the weeklong celebration was a great way to get our staff into SOL mode. We start tests next week. Be sure to have your students bring a fully changed laptop each day. Finally, we look forward to celebrating all our Mustang mothers on Sunday!

The month of May also recognizes two groups that we celebrate in our community; Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Jewish American Heritage Month

  • The 31 days of May are also designated as Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) when we pay tribute to the achievements and contributions made by American Jews throughout our nation’s history.
  • The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who have helped form the fabric of American history, culture, and society. More information is available online
  • Additional Resources about the contributions of Jewish Americans can be found at the National Archives and Library of Congress.

As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership. Please reach out with any questions.

Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Peter Kownacki

drop off

Drop Off by Cafeteria

There have been some instances with cars dropping off students by the cafeteria, Door #3, to avoid the kiss and ride line.  Students are not permitted to be dropped off there.  Students must be dropped off in the Kiss and Ride Line at Door #1.  There was an incident earlier this week with a staff member trying to park when a parent was in a hurry to leave after dropping their student off and took the turn fast and went into her lane, nearly hitting the staff member.  Please exercise patience and come into the school parking lot at Door #1 to drop your student off. We are trying to keep the line moving as fast as we can.  The volume of cars in Kiss and Ride this year is much higher than in previous years.

8th Grade Library Obligations

Parents, please take some time to check that your child doesn't have any outstanding fees or missing Library books. You can log into your MySchoolBucks account to check your shopping cart for any class fees currently owed. Library overdue notices have been sent to students and are also available to view in their Destiny account, so work with your child to locate and return any materials still out. The cost for a missing or damaged book is $10, and the fee can be paid using MySchoolBucks or by bringing payment to the school. 8th graders wishing to attend the end of year celebration must be in good standing with all financial obligations cleared from their accounts. Contact the Main Office if you have any questions about fees. Questions about overdue or missing books can be directed to the Library staff.

Technology

It is important that students bring their chargers to SOL testing so they can plug in for power if needed.  Please mark the testing days on your calendars to make sure they bring their chargers:  May 9, 11 and 17!

In school we are doing health checks as SOL approaches and asking students to submit request tickets if their laptop needs support.   You can assist your student to submit a ticket for a broken laptop here: https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/student/ (Items to submit: broken screen, hard drive issues, missing keys, physical damage that impacts laptop functioning)

Please remind your students to do the following to help their laptop perform well.

  • Restart every day for updates.
  • Charge the laptop every night.
  • Submit a Request IT if you have any issues with your laptop that are not solved by restarting: Link to submit a Request Ticket

If your student has lost their charger it is $23 to replace it.

If your student has lost their laptop the cost is $481 to replace it.

You can pay through www.myschoolbucks.com or with cash/check in the main office.

Note: payments made to www.myschoolbucks.com may take 24 hours for payment to register at the school.
