Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week

Thank you so much to our AMAZING PTA for the breakfast, lunch, treats, gift cards, kind words and more!  We all feel so fortunate to work at a school with such supportive parents!

Stay Home When Sick

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

VaxUp

We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, or to find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Masking

As a reminder, students may return to school after five days of isolation if they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for five additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the five day isolation period. If individuals are unable to wear a mask when around others, they should continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

Register Now for the 2022-2023 School Year!

Did you know that registering early helps prevent overcrowded classrooms? REGISTER NOW!*

Virginia law requires that all children who will reach their 5th birthday on or before September 30, 2022, must be enrolled in kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year, unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will attend kindergarten at Oakton Elementary next year, and you have not already registered them, please contact Sandie Horton (sghorton@fcps.edu).

Please spread the word to your neighbors who don’t already have a child at Oakton ES. Have neighbors with rising kindergarteners complete the online intake form, call the office at 571-642-6302 or email sghorton@fcps.edu.

* If your student currently attends OES, you do not need to re-register for the coming year.

positivity project

Next week, students will be focusing on other peoples mindset. Students will review the elements:

  • Being present and giving others my attention
  • Knowing my words and actions affect others
  • Supporting others when they struggle
  • Cheering on others' success
  • Identifying and appreciating the good in others

2022-2023 Class Assignments

At Oakton, we strive for healthy, heterogeneous student enrollment in each classroom. We have a process in place whereby teachers, specialists, and administrators confer with grade level teams to make recommendations that will result in a well-balanced school setting.  These settings include a broad range of academic levels, behavioral characteristics, and learning styles.  Teacher styles are also taken into consideration when completing teacher assignments.

To further outline the process, there are eight areas used in the determination of class assignments.  These include:

  • Heterogeneous groupings
  • Gender balance
  • Balance of special needs
  • Peer interactions
  • Special services
  • Learning environment
  • Health and medical concerns
  • Equitable distribution of students

These criteria play a role in the final decision for assignment. While parent input is welcomed, a request for an individual teacher cannot be granted.  Assigning students is a complex and educational process that we take seriously. We have developed procedures to best match students with classroom settings and teachers.

Parents are welcome to share information about their child here. All input must be shared via the google form by Friday, May 13.  We will only be using this document when we create classes, emails will not be considered.
