Franklin Families and Students,
Good afternoon! I have some exciting new to share with you about one of our school leaders.
We would like to congratulate Mr. Rob Gibbs, one of our awesome Assistant Principals, for taking the next step on his leadership journey. Mr. Gibbs will be the new Assistant Principal at Floris Elementary School in Herndon next year. While we are sad to see him leave our school family, we are grateful for the positive impact he has made at Franklin and we know great things are in store for Mr. Gibbs in the future. We are also excited that he will be staying in Region 5 and will be just around the corner at Floris!
Rob Gibbs has been a part of the Franklin MS community for 19 years. He has spent time as a Health & PE teacher, Assessment Coach, and during the last six years, Mr. Gibbs has been an Assistant Principal at our school. During this time, he has been a strong partner with our families, our staff, and our students. Mr. Gibbs will remain in his current position for the rest of the school year and he will begin his new role at Floris ES this summer.
In the coming weeks, we will begin the process for selecting a new Assistant Principal for our school community. We will also be sure to communicate some of the ways we can show our appreciation to Mr. Gibbs for his passion, dedication, and commitment to the entire Franklin MS community.
Please help us share a big congratulations to Mr. Gibbs!
Sincerely,
Dustin Wright
Principal

COVID-19 Updates from FCPS
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.
However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.
Spring SOL Testing Calendar
The spring SOL testing calendar can be found below. Details about testing days and possible changes to the bell schedule will be communicated regularly to students ahead of the testing window. It is important that students are in school on-time on these testing days. Please avoid scheduling appointments during this time.
Wednesday, May 11 - Math 7, Math 7 HN SOL
Thursday, May 12 - Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry SOL
Tuesday, May 17 - Reading 7 SOL
Wednesday, May 18 - Reading 8 SOL
A few items to note related to testing:
- If a student is absent on their testing day, makeup tests can occur throughout the testing window.
- Local alternative assessments have been approved by the state of Virginia in Grade 7 History, Grade 8 Writing and Grade 8 Civics and Economics. Teachers will be using an alternative assessment in those classes in lieu of an SOL test. Those assessments occur within the classroom setting throughout the second semester.
Parent Permission to Retest Form
The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing).
Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If you believe that your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the SOL test, please complete the Google form below. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.
Please complete this Google Form as soon as possible to provide consent for your child to retest, if needed. If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Franklin’s school test coordinator, Brandon Clarke.
Student Laptop Chargers
Students are responsible for charging their laptops every night so that they are able to fully participate in learning throughout the school day. Please check in with your student to ensure they have a charger and are actively keeping their school laptop charged. This will be particularly important prior to SOL testing starting next week. If your student needs a replacement charger, the cost is $23.00. You can purchase one through MySchoolBucks, or send in cash or check.
