Thank you for all of the love and support this past week as we celebrated Teacher and Staff Appreciation at Jackson MS. From the breakfast bar on Monday to the personalized gift cards on Friday, each day of the week was uniquely special. This year, our teachers have worked especially hard as we have returned to a full year of in-person learning and your recognition shows your appreciation for their dedication.

Thank you to our parent volunteers who helped with our music trip to Hershey Park this past Friday. Your support makes events such as this possible for all of our students.

We are postponing our Cultural Celebration and will look to hold this great event in the fall next school year.

Algebra 1 & 2 Final Exam Announcement
ALL students enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, or Algebra 2 will be taking their final exam on June 1st, 2022 during the first two blocks. More details have been shared with students during class. Please reach out to your child’s Algebra teacher if you have any questions/concerns.

End of the Year Clinic Update
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.
Medication authorization forms for the next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services.

Join us this summer and fight off the summer academic “slide” with this engaging program that gives middle school students a chance to review the math and English skills they learned during the school year and also try a fun new Coding/Video Game- themed STEM class. Students will work with current Jackson MS teachers on academics in the morning, and then choose from a huge selection of week-long elective options for the afternoon. Transportation, breakfast, lunch, snacks and school supplies are all included!

How To Survive Middle School 2022

Are you a rising 7th grader who will attend Luther Jackson in the fall? This is your chance to get this middle school thing figured out early! Come and meet students from other elementary schools who will come together here at Jackson as 7th graders, learn your way around the building, get to know some fantastic Jackson teachers, and have a great time! Registered students will be given access to a wealth of virtual information about LJMS as well as get a chance to explore the building when they come for one of the two different 2-day sessions. Transportation to LJMS, dinner, and a new Luther Jackson t-shirt are included in the tuition.

Come and get to know the school, teachers and hang out with other students who will also be joining the jaguar community this August. There is lots of fun to be had and great opportunities to get ahead of the game and feel prepared for your first few days of high school.

VIP Camp Thoreau

Dates: June 27-July 28, 2022 (campers are encouraged to attend all 5 weeks)

Location: Thoreau MS
Eligibility: rising 7th & 8th graders
Cost: $50
FCPS and Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (DNCS) have teamed up to offer a five week camp for rising 7th and 8th graders. Our camp will be a combination of students from the following middle schools: Kilmer, Glasgow, Holmes, Jackson, Poe, and Thoreau. Bus transportation will be provided from various pick-up locations which will be communicated in June prior to the start of camp.
There is a $50 registration fee., and a mandatory parent meeting before camp starts.
The staff is led by your local After-School Specialists and trained DNCS staff. Campers will have a great time playing sports, games, doing arts and crafts and exploring concepts in science and technology.

SOL Calendar - SOL's begin this week!
PTA CORNER
Last week, we celebrated the teachers and staff of Luther Jackson with a week full of events. We could not have done this without the support from this community. Thank you to everyone who donated items, gift cards and their time! A special thank you to Allyson Jurutka, our Hospitality Chairperson, who planned and coordinated the weeks' events.

Transportation Reminders
Morning Kiss and Ride
A reminder that school begins at 7:30 and students should be in their seat at or before that time. If you are dropping your student off at kiss and ride, please allow adequate travel time for traffic and the kiss and ride line. Please pull up past the flagpole and have your student prepared to exit your vehicle quickly to keep the line moving. Students should not exit cars on Gallows Rd or close to Gallows Rd.
Afternoon Kiss and Ride reminders
Students are dismissed at 2:15 and all students should be picked up by 2:25.
Students should not walk across the parking lot to get in cars in the Kiss and Ride line.
Students are not permitted to get in cars on Gallows Rd.
Bus Passes
If your student plans to ride home with another student on a different bus, they must go to the main office at least one day prior to the event to obtain a bus pass. Students should present a handwritten note giving permission in order to obtain a bus pass. If a student needs to ride a different bus for more than a few days, they should go to Student Services for assistance.

Originally from El Salvador, Ms. Orellana has worked in FCPS for many years, speaks Spanish and is learning Portuguese.
