Be sure to thank your child’s teachers this week as we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. A kind note or email goes a long way in making a teacher’s day!

School Bus Reminders

  • Due to capacity issues, per transportation, we are not able to grant permission to ride requests this year unless for a medical reason or an emergency, which requires verification and a bus pass from office staff.
  • A reminder that students are not permitted to leave school and return to take a late bus home. Only students who stayed after school and participated in our programming are permitted to ride the late bus home.

Preparing for the SOLs

At Irving, we believe that the SOL tests are just one of many ways students show what they know. While we appreciate the data the tests provide, we are really interested in seeing our students growth over this school year. We do NOT want students to stress about these tests. To help students be ready for not only the SOLs but a successful end of the school year, students should,

  • get a good night of sleep the night before. Being well rested helps students’ short and long term memory!
  • eat breakfast! Irving offers free breakfast every morning.
  • step away from screens and give themselves breaks after school to enjoy a screen free activity.

We are excited about the many other authentic assessments that students will participate in, which provide them the choice of how they demonstrate their learning. These performance-based assessments are now used in lieu of the US History, Civics, and 8th grade Writing SOLs.

School Computers & SOL Testing

We will begin our SOL testing on Thursday, May 5, with the 8th grade SOL. In order for testing to go smoothly, please make sure your child brings their FULLY charged school laptop to school every day and especially on our testing days. We have a very limited number of chargers and an even smaller number of loaner laptops. We need all students to bring their fully charged school laptop to school every day.

Student Laptop Chargers

It is important that all students charge laptops each night, as we do not have the ability to charge them in classrooms at the beginning of each day. For students who need to purchase a replacement charger, the cost is $23. Chargers can be purchased two ways:

  1. Go to MySchoolBucks and pay for one online and then pick it up from the Tech Office the next day.

  2. Send a check made out to Irving MS with your student to school. They will take it to the Tech Office in the morning and pick up a replacement charger   at the same time.
