Bulldog Breakdown 5/1 - 5/7

Good Evening Bulldog Families–

I hope that you and your family were able to enjoy a fantastic weekend!

This week’s Bulldog Breakdown is full of information. It’s the time of year where there are a lot of different calendars that converge: academic testing, activities, and end of year. Please take some time to check out the upcoming events below that pertain to you and your students. Families of Seniors need to especially pay attention to things such as exams, WeStep, and graduation. If you have any questions, please reach out to your subschool.

This week we kick off our AP and SOL exams.  I know that testing may cause stress and anxiety for some students and families. In an attempt to help, here are some simple tips to think about with your students in helping improve performance and reduce stress (both for you and them): Remind them to break down review in chunks as opposed to “cramming” all in one night, make sure your they get a good night’s sleep throughout the week, make sure they eat breakfast the day of the exam, and encourage them to be confident in what they’ve learned. This is a singular data point in their academic career, and while it is important, it does not define them as learners or individuals.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations. You can do that through e-mail, call, or  through the form located here: https://forms.gle/4eW9rgPRVBF2a5gd8

Go Bulldogs!

9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?

Topic: Opportunities to Engage with Dr. Reid

Our incoming superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, is visiting FCPS next week to learn more about our schools and community. During her visit, there will be a special, in-person event for staff, families, and students on Tuesday, May 3, starting at 7 p.m. More details, including how to register and submit questions, will be shared with you directly via email in the coming days.

On Tuesday, May 17, Dr. Reid will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall, starting at 7 p.m. We will share details about this event in newsletters and directly via email.

Topic: Updated Isolation Procedures for Students Effective May 1

Since the start of the pandemic, Fairfax County Public Schools has regularly reviewed and adjusted our health and safety guidance in alignment with recommendations from local, state and national health experts.

As a result, FCPS will be changing current isolation procedures for students who have tested positive for COVID-19. Beginning May 1, 2022, your child may return to in-person instruction and activities, including athletics, when your child has met the following criteria:

  • Student has completed at least five days of isolation; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
  • Student wears a well-fitting mask for 5 additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the 5-day isolation period, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance

If students are unable to wear a mask when around others, they are to continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home.

Children who are in isolation will continue to have access to our StreamIn/CheckIn during this time.

The new procedure aligns with the timeline recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). It also follows improving vaccination rates in the Fairfax Health District, as well as a continued community level of low in Fairfax County.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe.

Topic: Morning Attendance Notifications

Morning attendance calls, texts, and e-mails are suspended until June 10. Many of our students are involved in AP and SOL testing and are in designated testing sites during our normal attendance-taking time. Evening attendance notification will continue. Parents and guardians, continue to use the normal absence reporting. If you have any questions, please contact your subschool.
