The Parklawn PTA is excited for the many events taking place in May!

Staff Appreciation– The PTA thanks all Parklawn Elementary staff for their dedication to teaching and commitment to creating a caring school community, and for being role models for our students. We hope the treats shared from May 2 - May 6 show our great appreciation for all you do! The PTA was also happy to award several mini-grants to staff earlier this spring to purchase items such as books and magazine subscriptions, classroom supplies, a speaker to use in fitness activities, and supplies for Parklawn’s gardening beds. 

Bingo Night– This Parklawn tradition returns on Friday, May 20, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.! Come play Bingo, with prizes for winners. The PTA will also hold a raffle for gift baskets and special activities offered by teachers and staff. Families can bring a picnic dinner to this outdoor event. The PTA will offer pre-packaged snacks for purchase. The PTA is excited to welcome families to this fun event!

Officer Elections– In last week’s Panther Press, we shared that we will be holding elections for the Vice President and Treasurer positions at the PTA meeting on May 26. The Vice President helps to plan events for the school community during the year. The Vice President also works with the President and Treasurer to submit required documents and forms to the Virginia State PTA and National PTA. The Vice President will serve for two years (the 2022-2024 school years).

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Leadership. Leadership means you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best.

Leadership can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.

For individuals, leadership is a way to achieve what you know is important, as groups of people invariably achieve more than individuals. If you want to achieve your vision for the future, you need to inspire others to join you. As an individual’s ability to lead develops, so does that person’s confidence and sense of self-efficacy.
