* Note: Boys Tennis home match against Alexandria City was moved from Friday to Thursday at 4:00. Baseball was also moved from Friday to Thursday.

Baseball

Woodson baseball extended its winning streak against South County to seven with an 11-8 home victory on Tuesday evening. The Cavaliers didn’t make it easy on themselves, with a half dozen errors, but their offense was ultimately too much for the Stallions.

Ben Smallwood went five strong innings to earn the win, allowing only one earned run while striking out seven.  He never let defensive miscues rattle him and repeatedly pitched out of jams, stranding 6 base runners.  Connor Krahulec closed the game with two strikeouts to earn the save.

Woodson’s offense was in high gear from the start, opening the game with four consecutive base hits in the bottom of the 1st, leading to a five run-run inning.  Senior Brady Lencz led the onslaught with three hits, three runs, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Sophomore Andrew Perks contributed two hits and two walks.

Woodson visited West Springfield on Friday. The Spartans honored their Senior class with a 5-1 victory over the Cavaliers. Woodson’s defensive woes continued, but the offense couldn’t keep up its hot hitting.

Brady Lencz pitched well for the Cavs, limiting the home team to only four hits in as many innings. Unfortunately, the second inning was an unfortunate confluence of defensive mishaps. The inning started with a pop fly which dropped after miscommunication between defenders. A sacrifice bunt turned into a hit when it slid between two fielders. A solid RBI single put the Spartans on the board first. The inning might have ended with only minor damage when what appeared to be a double play ball, but an errant throw to 3rd opened the floodgates and West Springfield quickly led 5-0.

Woodson only managed two hits on the night. Connor Krahulec doubled to start the 2nd inning, but was stranded at 3rd when the final two batters of the inning struck out. The Cavs avoided the shutout when pinch hitter Ian Santamauro drove in a run with two outs in the final inning. The Cavs hit several balls hard, only to see the Spartans make a series of outstanding defensive plays.

Girls Lacrosse

Woodson girls’ lacrosse had two big home game wins this week.  Tuesday night, the JV and varsity teams faced off against the Lake Braddock Bruins.  The Cavalier JV squad bested the Bruins 10 - 6, and the Cavalier varsity defeated the Bruins 21 – 8.  The entire team saw action in the game which was highlighted by several defenders tallying goals.  Friday was senior night at Pat Cunningham Stadium. The Lady Cavaliers took on the Alexandria City Titans.  The JV Lady Cavaliers beat the Titans 16 – 1.  The Varsity Lady Cavaliers won with a score of 20 – 3.  The highlight of the night was the Woodson graduating seniors being announced onto the field along with their families.  Woodson girls lacrosse 2022 graduating seniors include:  Kendyl Ellenberger (James Madison University), Lauren Faulkner (Florida State), Mikaely Griffin (College of Charleston), Emerson Bradshaw (East Carolina), Holly Wehrlen (Virginia Tech), and Jayla Teller (Virginia Tech or Lee-McRae College).

Boys Tennis

Woodson Boys Tennis came away with victories against West Potomac, West Springfield, and Robinson last week. They remain undefeated at 10-0. The team has three more matches this week: Tuesday at Alexandria City (4:00 start), Wednesday at South County (4:30 start), and at home Thursday against Alexandria City (4:00 start).

Softball

Woodson Varsity Softball took to the road this past week and came away with a win and loss.

On Monday, the Cavaliers traveled to Alexandria City and came away with an impressive 6-1 victory. Woodson was led by pitcher Claire Warden, who threw a complete 7-inning game.  The sophomore allowed 1 run and struck out 8.  Defensively, Woodson played an error-free game and was solid, turning a double play and cutting down an Alexandria runner stealing second.

The score was tied entering the last inning when the Cavaliers’ bats exploded, bringing in 5 runs. Sarah Banker’s bunt single brought in Amelia Kim from 3rd with the go ahead run. Syd Huffman followed with an RBI double to plate another run. Emma Fleming followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 4-1. Next batter Sedona Adams’ line drive to center field delivered another run. Two batters later Elizabeth Schneider drove in the final run with a line drive to center. Woodson’s offensive attack was led by Adams, Banker, Huffman, Schneider, and Warden each with 2-hits apiece.

The week ended with a loss at Patriot District leader West Springfield.

After 6 games on the road, the Cavaliers return home this Wednesday for games against Lake Braddock and will celebrate Senior Night on Friday against Alexandria City.
