Thoreau Matters

April 29, 2022

Dear Thoreau Families,

We had a very exciting week at Thoreau as we welcomed over 600 rising seventh graders for our annual activities fair. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to meet our counselors, administration and many of our student volunteers (see below). Although it may seem like summer break is rapidly approaching with only six weeks left, we are focusing on fishing our school year strong. We have many end of the year events still in the planning stages and we look forward to celebrating the success of our students this school year.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

Principal

Spring SOL Testing

We kindly ask for your assistance in preparing your student for the upcoming SOLs. Please use the following checklist to address important steps to ensure a positive testing experience.

Parent/Guardian SOL Checklist:

  • Ensure your student is present and on time.
  • Ensure your student gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast in the morning.
  • Remind your student to have their cell phone off and away in their backpack.
  • Check to see if your student has a book to read. Students are allowed to read in their testing room once they have finished.
  • Verify your student’s laptop is in working order:
    • fully charge their laptop every night (failing to have a fully charged laptop the day of testing may impact their ability to test).
    • pack their charger in their backpack (if your student lost their charger, please purchase a replacement via MySchoolBucks).  Computer issues should be reported immediately to Student IT Support.
  • Complete the Expedited Retake Permission form by clicking here.
s

If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Thoreau’s school test coordinator, Erin Lynch (703.846.8058 or emlynch@fcps.edu).

Reminder: Pick Up Medication by End of School Year

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school June 10, 2022. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services

Sports Health Screening and Pre-participation Physical (PPE)

The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Tuesday May 17, 2022 from 5:30-8 pm.  Our team physicians and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening including a postural exam, flexibility evaluation, and information regarding what each of those assessments mean.  If, during the screening or physical the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a donation of $50 for the PPE.  To pre-register for a PPE, go to: https://forms.gle/dSNCjto7nUtkr4Uk7  and follow the links to Athletic Physicals (PPE).  The link is now active.  You can also find a link to the new Physical form at that site. Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. You can pay for the PPE through my school bucks at the following link: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/stores/catalog/getproduct?requestAction=ViewAll&clientKey=ZZI5ZQWBKS04NJ8&productGroupKey=ZZIOEEZJBP0RROF&view=&productKey=ZZ5QPAELMZYWA2U

If your son or daughter is thinking of playing a sport, he/she will need to have a VHSL pre-participation examination (PPE) completed on the official VHSL physical form.  This exam must be dated after May 1, 2022 in order for your son/daughter to be eligible to participate on any team, including pre-season conditioning.  The physical exam on page 3 must be completed and signed by a physician, a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant (MD, NP, PA, or DO).

Staff Appreciation Week is next week and the PTA Hospitality Committee and the Thoreau Administration have lots of fun activities planned.  Thank you to all who have donated gift cards--we still could use a few more https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805054eaeac2da64-gift.  Please contact Missy directly if you want to drop off at my house in Vienna.  The gift cards will be distributed on Tuesday (National Teacher Appreciation Day).  We have events planned by themes all week which include National Harry Potter Day, Star Wars Day, Cinco de Mayo and last but not least, International No-Diet Day (Hint: You Scream, I scream, we all scream for....!).

We especially need help on Wednesday when we will be taking carts of Star Wars themed drinks and snacks to the classrooms for the teachers.  Thank you for any time you might be able to help.  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805054EAEAC2DA64-teacher
