Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We had another fun-filled and busy week at Poplar Tree. It was exciting to meet our newest Panthers at our Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday night! Many of the students told me they can't wait to start school next year.Ā

Our incoming superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, is visiting FCPS next week to learn more about our schools and community. During her visit, there will be a special, in-person event for staff, families, and students on Tuesday, May 3, starting at 7 p.m. More details, including how to register and submit questions, will be shared with you directly via email in the coming days.Ā

On Tuesday, May 17, Dr. Reid will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall, starting at 7 p.m. We will share details about this event in newsletters and directly via email.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Assessment Information

Spring iReady Assessment Grades 1-6

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.

iReady assessments will be given to all students in Grades 1-6 at Poplar Tree this spring within the following testing window: April 12-May 20 Grades 1 & 2 and April 12- June 9 Grades 3-6

For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your childā€™s teacher.Ā  Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your childā€™s teacher or Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal/Test Coordinator (calarsen@fcps.edu)

Kindergarten VKRP Spring Testing

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) assessments provide actionable information that will assist teachers, school leaders, and parents/guardians in supporting student success in school and to better understand school readiness skills across the state of Virginia. This spring, all kindergarteners will participate in the three assessment components of the VKRP, which measure literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program Parent Notification webpage.Ā  Testing will be conducted between April 12 and May 20.Ā  If you have questions about the assessment or the specific assessment dates for your child, please contact your childā€™s teacher.
