National Teacher Appreciation Week

National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-6, 2022, honors teachers and recognizes the lasting contributions they make to students’ lives. This year, more than ever, we owe them our thanks for their unwavering dedication and commitment to their students and their families.  Use this week to celebrate the ways teachers went above and beyond during a year that was riddled with change and uncertainty.  Thank you Herndon teachers!

SOL Testing

The Spring Non-Writing SOL test window started during the last week of April. Please view the Herndon High School testing webpage for testing dates. Students received an email from Alisa Shreve (our Assessment Coach) with their testing schedule and other important information. Please encourage your child to check their school email for this message.

During May, a modified bell schedule will be implemented to accommodate testing on the following dates: Tuesday, May 3; Friday, May 6; Monday, May 9; and Friday, May 12.

On Tuesday, May 3, a modified bell schedule will be implemented to accommodate Biology, Chemistry and Earth Science SOL testing. Students will be reminded of this schedule change by staff members; however, parents/guardians are asked to remind their child about this modified schedule as well.

AP Testing Volunteers Needed

Herndon High School is in need of volunteers to help with AP Testing May 2-May13.  These individuals will be assisting the head proctors in charge of the exams and their duties will include checking ID’s, handing out and collecting tests, monitoring the test takers and counting tests when finished. Volunteers must be over 18 years old and a high school graduate. We also love any college students who would like to volunteer. Please email Shannon Kamenick at sfkamenick@fcps.edu if you would like to help out.

From the Library

You know it’s almost summer when SYNC Audiobooks for Teens returns with free audiobook downloads. Their free season has started, and runs through mid-August. Two titles are available each week, and change every Thursday. Once you’ve downloaded a title, it’s yours to keep forever. Find all of the details here.

Students can log in to Destiny (using their school Google account) to search for books, put books on hold, see what they have checked out, and renew their books. MackinVIA (linked through Destiny or available as an app) offers hundreds of popular ebooks and e-audiobooks that students can check out 7 days a week/ 24 hours a day. We love to make recommendations based on student interests.

As the end of the school year approaches, please keep the following due dates in mind. Seniors should return all library books by Tuesday, May 17. All other students should return their materials by Friday, May 27. Information about summer checkout for returning 9th – 11th graders will be posted on Schoology soon.  Students will need to have a clear account to check books out for the summer.

Did you know the library is open late several days a week? On Mondays we are open till 3:30, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays we’re open till after the late buses depart. If your student would like to enjoy the library later than our posted hours, please have them talk with us.

Sports Physicals

Herndon High School will be hosting their Sports Physicals on Monday, May 2nd. For the first time ever, it is guaranteed that we will not have any games that night- so take advantage and cross this off your to do list for next year!

The current physicals on file expire on June 30th, a new physical is needed for next year. After June 30th, students will not be permitted to participate in any team related activities (other than interest meetings) until a new physical has been submitted. You are always welcome to get a sports physical through your family physician or an urgent care center, but this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser. We receive NO FUNDING from the county or from game ticket sales- this event is how we raise money to purchase medical supplies (bandages, gauze, tape, crutches, splints, etc.) that we use for all the sports teams for the entire school year. We provide a comprehensive physical evaluation with several stations including height, weight, blood pressure, vision screening, and orthopedic and postural evaluations performed by Athletic Trainers, Nurses, EMTs and Physical Therapists. The money earned is used to purchase the supplies that allow us to help our student-athletes stay healthy and play to their highest potential. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes.

We thank you for your continued support of our program and look forward to seeing you on the May 2nd!
