Glasgow Community Gazette - April 24

Powell

Greetings!

It was great participating in Hoop It Up with our staff and students on Friday! We have an awesome community. On Saturday, I spent a full day within my Urban Superintendent Cohort with Howard University and AASA. Today, I spent time with some family and friends while still celebrating my birthday this month. Also, mark your calendars! Sleepy Hollow Elementary PTA will be holding two major fundraising events this week:

SHES PTA Annual Auction will be held online, starting on Tuesday, April 26 and ending Sunday, May 1 at 9pm. Everyone is invited to participate and bid on the many amazing items they have to offer!  Further details and auction link will be posted on www.shespta.org, SHES PTA Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram soon. Also on April 26, SHES PTA will hold Spirit Night at Dogfish Head Alehouse in Seven Corners. Come in for lunch or dinner and invite your friends and neighbors: ALL proceeds from meals sold that Tuesday benefit SHES (no password or flyer necessary), including online and to-go orders. Volunteers will be on site selling raffle tickets starting at 5p to win gift baskets and other donated items.

This is Dogfish’s last time hosting a fundraising event before they close their doors forever in May! Let’s join SHES in saying goodbye and thank you for their tremendous support to the local community for the past 15 years!

Due to the rise in opioid overdoses in the Fairfax Health District (which is consistent with national and state trends), Fairfax County Public Schools has partnered with Fairfax County Government to provide educational webinars on youth substance use trends and supports. The free webinars are scheduled for April 26, and April 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Both webinars will provide the same information.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Most commonly used substances
  • In-depth opioid information
  • Reasons why youth use substances
  • How parents can support their children
  • Available FCPS and Fairfax County Resources
  • How students, parents, and community members can connect with support providers

Registration for the webinars is available online. We recognize those in our community observing Good Friday. Millions of Orthodox Christians and their churches celebrate holidays according to the Julian calendar. Good Friday commemorates the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. Chag Sameach to all in our community celebrating Passover! Many Jewish communities mark the last day of Passover (April 23) as the end of a holiday that celebrates the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. We value everyone in the community! Let's have a great week!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

After School Program: Please review the following important information about after school activities and discuss these changes with your student. In an effort to increase accountability and supervision in our after school program, we are implementing the following new policies and procedures:

  • At dismissal, students must go directly to their after school location (cafeteria or classroom) and all other students should go to their bus or the late bus area in the gym.
  • Students should remain in their after school location and be supervised by their sponsor or after school staff at all times.
  • Students staying after school must follow the same behavior expectations for Kindness, Commitment and Safety as during the regular school day.
  • Before after school activities are dismissed, students will now receive an AFTER SCHOOL BUS PASS to verify that they had permission to be after school and were with an adult sponsor.

Students who do not meet behavior expectations may not ride the bus and will need a parent pick up. Students may also face disciplinary consequences including a removal from after school activities. As always, please feel free to reach out to your child’s administrator, or our After School Activities Director, Greg Williams.

Ramadan: This year Ramadan begins at sunset the evening of April 2 and ends at sunset the evening of May 1, 2022. During this time, many of our Muslim students may be fasting. Students who are fasting and wish to stay at an alternate location during lunch may ask for a pass to the library. Because librarians may be teaching classes, students going to the library during their lunch block will be expected to self-monitor their conduct and meet all expectations for behavior.
