FanQuest

FanQuest has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 30th at Woodson HS.  Come out and watch Woodson’s Special Olympics Unified Basketball team play Robinson Secondary School!

Unified is a model of Special Olympics where student athletes with disabilities and their same-aged peers play alongside one another on one unified team. This differs from Special Olympics because that model only has athletes with disabilities. With the support from our Woodson Buddies and Partnership class, Woodson HS has a strong Unified team and we participate in Soccer, Basketball and Track and Field. FanQuest is the culminating event for both Special Olympics and Unified Basketball.

WTW CAVS SPORTS UPDATES

Activities

Check out all of these opportunities to enjoy the spring weather and cheer on our teams! Follow @Woodsonathletic on Twitter for current athletic updates and schedules.

Baseball

Coming off spring break, Woodson’s baseball team experienced its roughest stretch of the season. While the Cavs were competitive in every game, fielding and baserunning mistakes proved costly. Despite dropping 3 of the last 4 games, the Cavs record stands at a strong 9-6.

West Potomac is a new addition to the Patriot District this season and has quickly established itself as one of the strongest teams in the District.  The visiting Wolverines jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when the Cavaliers defense struggled in the opening frame, then extended it to 6-2 in the 3rd after an error and two walks set up a big inning.  Strong relief pitching from Ben Smallwood kept the Cavs in the game.  Woodson fought back gamely, led by Dillon Brody’s 2 hits and 4 RBI’s. The Cavs closed to 7-6, but left the tying run on third in the last inning.

Robinson has been the Woodson’s nemesis for years – sweeping their last 7 contests. The Cavaliers took out their frustration with a 15-3 blowout win.  Woodson’s first two batters were hit by pitches.  An infield error and a single by Brady Lencz staked the Cavs to an early 2-0 lead.  Woodson’s offense was in high gear for the balance of the game. Colin Jones and Andrew Perks each scored three times and four different Cavs had multiple base hits.  Starter Ben Smallwood and reliever Lars Greenlee kept the Rams offense in check.

Unfortunately, the Cavs couldn’t keep the momentum going and dropped a tight contest at Fairfax.  Both teams got strong performances from their starting pitchers. Brady Lencz struck out 8 over 5 1/3 innings, while PJ Suppes allowed only one run over four innings for the Lions. Woodson led 2-1 entering the bottom of the 6th inning, before Fairfax rallied for 4 runs. Woodson fought back in the 7th, bringing the tying run to the plate before an outstanding catch by the Lions’ outfield began a game-ending double play.

Woodson faced off against Alexandria City High School (formerly T.C. Williams) for the first time since 2017. The Titans returned to the Patriot District for the 2022 season, after a four-year absence. The Cavaliers hadn’t dropped consecutive games all season, but struggled to find their game.  Early walks and errors in the middle innings staked AC to a 7-2 lead after four innings.  Woodson rallied in the 6th when Jay Sorkin hit a two-run double to left field followed by a sacrifice fly from Andrew Perks to close the score to 7-5, but could get no closer.

Girls Lacrosse

Last Tuesday, the Woodson JV and varsity girls’ lacrosse teams hosted the South County Stallions at Pat Cunningham stadium. Both teams fought through the cold to clinch victories. The JV Woodson Lady Cavaliers won their game 15 – 3, and the Varsity Lady Cavaliers defeated the Stallions 14-7.  On Thursday, the JV and varsity teams headed across town to take on district rivals, the West Springfield Spartans.  The JV girls took the field first and had an action packed back and forth game that ended in a 7 – 7 tie. The Varsity Lady Cavalier were able to keep the ball from the Spartan offensive stars through tough defensive rides, and superb draw control play by sophomore Eva Lennon and her draw circle teammates.  Woodson junior Goalie, Bristol Sine, helped keep the Spartans from taking an early lead by making several tough one-on-one saves.  Junior midfielder, Jenna Cook, gave Woodson an early lead by scoring several goals with excellent shot placement.  Additional goals by sophomores Alex Walrath, Reese Cuviello, and senior Emerson Bradshaw expanded the Woodson lead, which allowed Woodson to withstand a West Springfield last minute two goal surge.  The final game score was Woodson 8, West Springfield 6. This marked the first district loss for West Springfield. The Woodson Varsity Lady Cavaliers have a 8-3 record.

Boys Tennis

Woodson Boys Tennis traveled to Fairfax and Lake Braddock for last week’s matches, and came away with 9-0 victories at both of them. The team remains undefeated! Matches this week are Monday (home against West Potomac), Wednesday (away against West Springfield), and Friday (home against Robinson). All matches begin at 4:00.

Softball

Woodson Varsity Softball went 1-1 last week in District play. They opened the week with a road loss at Robinson 5-0. Woodson was held to one hit, a single by Sophomore Sydney Huffman in the 4th inning. Defensively, Huffman playing shortstop started a nifty 6-4-3 double play in the second inning to stop a Robinson rally.

On Thursday, Woodson traveled to Fairfax to take on the Lions. After trailing 5-1 entering the 5th inning, Woodson’s bats came to life plating 18 runs in the final 3 innings en route to a 19-7 victory. The Cavalier’s offensive attack was led by Junior Sarah Banker who blasted a grand slam to right field to tie the game in the 5th.  Banker finished the night with 3 hits, 5 RBI, 2 steals and a sacrifice. Not to be out done, Freshman Penny Elliott added her own grand slam in the 6th inning to put the game out of reach.  Junior Elizabeth Schneider added 2 doubles with 3 RBI. Sophomores Sydney Huffman and Sedona Adams each had 2 hits and each drove in a run.

FCPS Ends Covid Testing

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the community level for Fairfax County is currently classified as low; this classification has continued for the past month. In addition, Fairfax Health District COVID-19 Vaccination Status indicates that more than 70% of all Fairfax Health Districts residents have been fully vaccinated (defined by receiving two of a two-dose vaccine or one of a single-dose vaccine) and more than 80% have received one dose. Based on FCPS metrics, FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22:

If students have symptoms and need to get tested, the following options are available:

  • COVID-19 Testing is available at various sites throughout Fairfax County and the state.

  • At-Home Test Kits—Students leaving the school CARE Room with symptoms of illness are provided an at-home test kit.

  • Test-To-Stay Program—In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), FCPS is providing access to the Test-To-Stay program for students who have been identified as a close contact when an outbreak has been declared. This program is available to any student who meets eligibility criteria and whose parent/legal guardian has provided consent for their participation.
