Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

We had a wonderful week in the Hive!  The 3rd and 4th graders went on field trips, we honored our military connected students, and celebrated Earth Day!

We want to take the opportunity to remind all families that use Kiss N Ride that families should only use the loop for drop off and pick up, please do not drop students off on the street.  Staff begin opening car doors and providing supervision in the Kiss N Ride loop at 8:20.  At the end of the day, all students should be picked up in the Kiss N Ride loop by 3:35.  Walkers should also be directly walking home.  Students should not be staying on the playground unless they have parent supervision.

This week wrapped up our final week of onsite Covid screening testing.  If you need access to a PCR test, please feel free to reach out so we can provide you with some places in the community where testing is available.

Class Placement Input Form for 2022-23

If your child is returning to Stenwood next school year, we offer you the opportunity to share any comments you would like regarding class placements. If you know that your family will not be joining us for the 2022-23 school year, please reach out to Mrs. Hunt, snhunt@fcps.edu or 703-208-7600 to let us know.

Our staff will be working on tentative class groupings this spring, with classroom assignments finalized in late August. As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests. Due to the many factors we must consider in creating classroom placements, including the reassignment of some teachers to a different grade level and the hiring of new teachers, requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete the optional Class Placement Input Form by Wednesday, May 4th for it to be taken into consideration. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider. Thank you.

Band/Strings Enrollment for All Rising 4th/5th/6th Graders- Due Friday, 4/29!

Please take a few minutes to fill out your child’s choice for next school year – those with multiple children in 4th, 5th and 6th grade next year will need to fill out a separate form for each student.

The 2022-2023 Band/Strings Enrollment Form is now open! https://forms.gle/wBTkW62XHbR6pMGz7

Please complete the form by Friday, April 29th.

As a reminder, ALL students currently in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are required to fill out the Band/Strings Enrollment Form. Your child’s weekly Specials schedule will include General Music, PE, and Art. In addition to all other Specials, students who choose to play an instrument will also have Band or Strings class once a week.  Our school will not be able to plan for your child’s Specials schedule until your selection is made.

Music store information, instrument rental information and supply lists will be sent home after all students have submitted their selection. If you have any questions about the Strings or Band Programs here at Stenwood, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Stay tuned for more!

Student Sign In/Out Computer – New!

We have digitized our sign in and out process! Instead of using paper binders, we are now using a laptop. This will help to speed up arrivals and dismissals, save paper, and increase accuracy.

If you are picking up or dropping off multiple students, only one entry with all of their names is necessary.

A staff member will be happy to assist you.

Stenwood Counselors’ Parent Workshop Series: Managing Screen Time and Technology at Home

These Parent Workshops will take place regularly on the last Friday of each month till the end of the school year on Zoom from 2:10-2:40pm, unless otherwise specified. We hope to see you there!

Lost and Found

As the weather gets warmer in the afternoons, our Lost and Found is growing.  Our amazing Photo Bees, with the help of Mrs. Krum, have digitally photographed the collection.  Here is a Lost and Found Video Slideshow of the items through last week.  If you see any items that belong to your family, please reach out to our Family Liaison, Maria Agha magha@fcps.edu with the item number(s) of the items you are missing and she will help return them to your family.  We will create a new video in May with items between now and then.

Online Tutoring Services Have Launched!

We are pleased to announce that students now have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Tutor.com is available 24/7, through online voice or text chat, and in your student’s preferred language. Student participation is optional and parents/guardians can opt their students out of accessing the service. You can learn more about Tutor.com on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services website.

Students will be able to access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology.  Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following instructional videos: Elementary video and Secondary video. Questions not answered in the posted resources may be sent to onlinetutoring@fcps.edu.

This new service will help many students complete assignments, better understand classroom lessons, and be successful.

Students in our school will be taking the SOL tests between May 3rd and May 27th. Here is the specific schedule for your child’s SOL tests:

Positivity Project:

Purpose/Connection

PP

This week we are focusing on Purpose/Connection. You have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

"Regardless of whatever I do, I know my purpose is to make a difference in people’s lives.”

~Tim Tebow

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • Do you ever wonder what your purpose is?
  • What kind of person do you want to be? What things could you be doing now to enhance the life of those around you?
  • What gifts, talents, and ideas do you have that you want to share?
