Dear Poplar Tree Families,

It was a busy week here at Poplar Tree. We were excited to see many students and families at the Chantilly Pyramid Art Show! It was wonderful to be able to participate in this community activity again after a two year absence.

We also had our monthly PTA meeting last night. We want to thank the PTA and our PTES families for generously supporting our students and staff.  We are looking forward to the Block Party on May 20!

Next week begins SOL testing for students in Grades 3 -6. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast on the day of their test.

Have a wonderful weekend!

April SCA spirit day

SCA Spirit Day Next Friday

The next SCA spirit day is next Friday, April 29, and it is a dress up day! Students are encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing gear to represent Harry Potter, Disney, Star Wars or superheroes. Students may also dress up as a character from Harry Potter, a Disney movie/show, Star Wars or as a superhero. We can’t wait to see all of the creativity and school spirit!

As a reminder, all costumes and props must be school appropriate (no weapons—guns, swords, etc. will be permitted!)

Assessment Information

Spring iReady Assessment Grades 1-6

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.

iReady assessments will be given to all students in Grades 1-6 at Poplar Tree this spring within the following testing window: April 12-May 20 Grades 1 & 2 and April 12- June 9 Grades 3-6

For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher.  Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal/Test Coordinator (calarsen@fcps.edu)

Kindergarten VKRP Spring Testing

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) assessments provide actionable information that will assist teachers, school leaders, and parents/guardians in supporting student success in school and to better understand school readiness skills across the state of Virginia. This spring, all kindergarteners will participate in the three assessment components of the VKRP, which measure literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program Parent Notification webpage.  Testing will be conducted between April 12 and May 20.  If you have questions about the assessment or the specific assessment dates for your child, please contact your child’s teacher.

Light the Night

Light the Night Campaign

We are moving into the final week of our Light the Night campaign. Our campaign ends Friday, April 29. Our school goal this year is to raise $7500. So far we have raised just over $2600. Thank you to those of you who have donated! We are so excited to be able to raise money to help find a cure for Blood Cancer and to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. We hope to meet or exceed our goal! This year, our campaign will be 100% virtual. In order to donate, please do one of the following:

  1. Donate on our school’s online donation page at https://pages.lls.org/ltn/nca/NorthVA21/poplarelementaryschool
  2. Donate on your child’s classroom donation page (see email from classroom teacher for this link)
  3. We encourage you to share these links with family members, community members, and through social media to help us raise as much money as possible
  4. The Student Council Association (SCA) officers have decided they wanted to help raise more money for the Light the Night Campaign, so they will be putting themselves up to get pied in the face! From 4/25-4/29, students will find four jars on a table in the lobby during arrival time. There will be one jar for each officer. Students can place money in whichever jar they’d like. The officer who has the most money in their jar at the end of the week will get pied in the face! All money collected in the jars will go DIRECTLY towards the Light the Night Campaign!

This year, we are doing a grade level competition at Poplar Tree. The grade level that donates the most money will have some brave teachers complete a dare voted on by students. So, help us raise money to see some of Poplar Tree’s teachers dump slime over their head, get turned into a human sundae, or maybe even get pied in the face! As of now, 4th grade in first with the most money raised and 3rd grade is in second place. Keep those donations coming!

Please contact Mrs. Sniffin, SCA teacher sponsor, at smsniffin@fcps.edu if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful cause!
