Franklin Sherman Flash - April 25

Dear Franklin Sherman Families,

Can you believe it's time to start the process of planning for the 2022-2023 school year?  As a part of our planning, we welcome your input into class placements for your child or children for next year.  Please use this form to share information you would like our team to consider related to class placement.  Please do not request a specific teacher.  These forms are shared with grade level teachers and they will see all comments.

Please continue to monitor your child for potential signs of illness.  If your child does not feel well or presents with any COVID-like symptoms, please keep them at home and seek medical advice.  Children should be symptom free for 24 hours without medication before sending them back to school. If you have someone with Covid in the household, the CDC recommends that other household members wear masks. We have experienced an increase in Covid cases within the school and we appreciate your continued support to keep our Franklin Sherman community healthy!

Sincerely,

Kathleen Quigley

Principal

Substance Abuse Webinars

FCPSlogo

Due to the rise in opioid overdoses in the Fairfax Health District (which is consistent with national and state trends), Fairfax County Public Schools has partnered with Fairfax County Government to provide educational webinars on youth substance use trends and supports. The free webinars are scheduled for April 20, April 26, and April 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Each of the three webinars will provide the same information.

The topics to be covered include:

  • Most commonly used substances.
  • In-depth opioid information.
  • Reasons why youth use substances.
  • Ways parents can support their children.
  • Available FCPS and Fairfax County Resources.
  • Ways students, parents, and community members can connect with support providers.

Registration for the webinars is available online.

Teacher Appreciation Week is Coming (May 2-6)

The PTA has planned a number of events next week to show our teachers, staff and bus drivers how much we appreciate them, and we need parent help!

  • Tuesday, May 3 - PTA catered lunch
  • Wednesday, May 4 - We're stocking the staff lounge with snacks/drink contributions from families, please sign up to bring an item and plan to drop it off in the front lobby by Friday, April 29
  • Thursday, May 5 - PTA catered lunch
  • Friday, May 6 - Donated potluck breakfast, contribute a breakfast item to be enjoyed by our teachers and staff, items can be dropped off at the front office prior to May 6 if labeled for the staff breakfast, and hot/warm items need to be delivered between 6:30-7:30 a.m. on May 6 ready to eat/serve

It would be wonderful if all of our students could make a nice card/letter/piece of artwork for their classroom teacher(s) and any specials/staff that they interact with. These can be brought in on any day the week of May 2nd.

Longfellow - Rising 7th Grade Open House

Longfellow is excited welcome our newest Lancers to our Rising 7th Grade Open House on May 19 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm!

Visitors will be able to walk the halls of Longfellow and see how our classrooms are set up, check out the cafeteria, hear from some of our student organizations and more! Longfellow administrators and counselors will be on hand to answer questions. There will not be a large-group presentation; this is an ‘Open House’ style event in which students may come with their family at any time during the evening.

If you have any questions, please contact Katie Madigan, Director of Student Services, at kemadigan@fcps.edu.

Students will be able to access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology.  Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following instructional videos: elementary video and secondary video.
