Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It was an exciting week at Langston Hughes Middle School!  The Region Assistant Superintendent, Douglas Tyson, awarded our own, Mr. Matt Fredericks, the Region 1 Outstanding New Secondary Teacher.  Mr. Fredericks will go on to compete with four other region winners for the finals announced in May.

Also, the School Board announced and welcomed Dr. Michelle Reid, as the new Superintendent of Schools.  She will begin in FCPS on July 1.  Our very own Hughes News anchor, Ariana Mamedova, was invited to interview Dr. Reid on her welcome tour of the county.  Enjoy the interview here! https://youtu.be/vRdD1dko7h8

And lastly, we greeted our incoming 7th graders from our feeder elementary schools.  They toured our school and got timely information from a student panel.  They also were treated to musical selections performed by the Panther Jazz Band and Orchestra, as well as the cast of the school musical The Wizard of Oz.  We look forward to hosting the community for the musical next weekend.  Be sure to secure your tickets; it promises to be a fun, family event.

Principal, Langston Hughes MS

Dress Code Considerations:

As the spring weather brings warmer temperatures, we’d like to work together to ensure that students continue to dress for success during their school day.  We’re asking for your support in speaking with your student and remind them that appropriate dress is expected for the classroom environment.  Students are expected to dress in a manner which does not distract from the educational process.  The exact wording regarding appropriate dress in the Student Rights and Responsibilities document is:

FCPS respects students’ right to express themselves in the way they dress. It is important, however, that their appearance is tasteful and appropriate for a K-12 school setting. Discussion about dress code violations shall be held privately and maintain the dignity of the student.

Clothing and accessories should not:

  • Display vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene language or images
  • Promote illegal or violent conduct
  • Contain threats or gang symbols
  • Promote the unlawful use of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or drug paraphernalia
  • Expose private parts or show an excessive amount of bare skin (see-through clothing)
  • Contain studs or chain belts
  • Include hats or other head coverings unless worn for significant religious, cultural, or medical purpose

The LHMS faculty and staff appreciate your support in this matter.

IB

As an IB school that values principled action, we take seriously the FCPS expectation that students complete 15 hours of service learning during their time in middle school.  The deadline for this year’s 8th graders is June 3, though prospective NJHS inductees have an additional hour’s requirement of 5 hours and all 20 of their hours are due by May 2.

Linked here is a list of ideas, resources, and virtual volunteer opportunities that should help students figure out how to serve if they are still looking for ideas.  This document was shared with students before spring break and you will need to be logged into a student’s @fcpsschools.net account to access.  In addition, students can log hours for their Environmental Stewardship Projects completed in Science 7 and 8th graders will have an opportunity to earn five hours through a Civics project on political advocacy in May.

To log hours, students will go to www.fcps.edu/naviance, click Student Log-in, and then click the link to X2Vol.  Students should be sure to respond to all three reflection questions when logging hours.  Any questions can be directed to our IB MYP Coordinator, Chris DelGrosso, at cjdelgrosso@fcps.edu.

It’s spring again, which means rain, flowers … and end of the school year stress! How can you encourage and support your student to finish STRONG?  Send them a FINISH STRONG gift bag! For $6, we will deliver a bag full of motivational items – sweets, fidgets, snacks, etc. – directly to them in their Connections classroom. Purchase your bag using the MySchoolBucks app. (Please do not send money to the school, as it may get misrouted!) Feeling generous? Purchase more than one bag, then contact Kristina Burke to let her know it is for a donation. LHMS teachers will nominate students they think should receive one. The money raised will help fund our AVID college readiness program.  Questions? Contact Mrs. Burke at  ktburke@fcps.edu.

**If you purchase more than one bag because you have more than one student at LHMS, please contact Mrs. Burke to ensure each student you purchase one for gets one. *

FCPS MSASP Survey

In FCPS, over 90% of our students participated in the after-school program this school year, with over 21,000 occurrences of students staying after-school.  Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School After-School Program (MSASP)!

Below is a link for an important 5-minute MSASP survey.  The survey is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after-school program, but they help drive program improvement and program quality.

All survey responses are due by April 22, 2022.  Thank you for your time!
