Glasgow Community Gazette - April 17

Powell

Greetings!

I hope this week’s message finds you rested after Spring Break last week and ready for a great end to the year.  SOL Testing is right around the corner and our 8th graders only have 30 school days left! Also, help us make the Beech Tree Fun Fair a success! Please volunteer for a shift or two on April 23rd from 9:30-2:30. We need lots of people so bring your friends. https://signup.com/go/DRapvZK. April is also School Library Month. We have a very active library at Glasgow Middle and two wonderful librarians, Tara Sanz and Monisha Blair. They have created a learning space for students to explore, create, and collaborate.

To limit the spread of COVID-19 and to keep schools open safely, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has been providing a COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing program to students and staff as part of its layered prevention strategies.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the community level for Fairfax County is currently classified as low; this classification has continued for the past month. In addition, Fairfax Health District COVID-19 Vaccination Status indicates that more than 70% of all Fairfax Health Districts residents have been fully vaccinated (defined by receiving two of a two-dose vaccine or one of a single-dose vaccine). More than 80% of residents have received one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Vaccination rates by age group indicates that more than 50% of students ages 5-11 and more than 90% of students ages 12-17 have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.  COVID-19 Vaccinations  are free and available at various locations in our community.

Based on these metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22, 2022:

Thank you for your patience as we navigate through the late stages of the pandemic together.

Lastly, this week we recognize those in our Glasgow Middle community observing Good Friday, the Friday before Easter. On this day of mourning, Christians observe the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus and what his suffering and death means for their faith. New Year's good wishes to our Theravada Buddhist community! Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” New years celebrations include a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Ramadan: This year Ramadan begins at sunset the evening of April 2 and ends at sunset the evening of May 1, 2022. During this time, many of our Muslim students may be fasting. Students who are fasting and wish to stay at an alternate location during lunch may ask for a pass to the library. Because librarians may be teaching classes, students going to the library during their lunch block will be expected to self-monitor their conduct and meet all expectations for behavior.

Justice Volleyball Visiting Glasgow: The Justice Wolves’ Volleyball team wrapped a historic fall 2021 season with a National District championship and its best finish and deepest postseason run since the program’s start in 2003. Our athletes persevered through all the pandemic limitations, changes, and setbacks to produce a committed and cohesive roster. The Wolves earned the runner-up trophy in the Region 6 and qualified for the State tournament, finishing 4 in the state. The team’s success came with the leadership of seven seniors and a host of talented underclassmen. Coach Ponton, head varsity coach, will be visiting Glasgow during all lunches on April 20 to answer questions and hand out information to anyone that is interested.

Tutor.com Opt Out: Students will be able to access Tutor.com through a link in Schoology beginning mid-April, 2022. Your student will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless you submit an opt-out request. If you do not want your student to have access to this online tutoring resource, complete the opt-out via ParentVUE by April 11, 2022.  Directions for opting out can be found on the Online Tutoring Services website. If you are unable to opt-out via ParentVUE, submit the hard copy form that will be sent home by your school. You may also opt your student out of Tutor.com tutoring service at a later date via ParentVUE or by submitting a request to your student's school.
