Franklin MS Weekly Update - April 15

art show

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon. We have had a great start to the 4th quarter at FMS! Our students and staff have been hard at work as they prepare for the final two months of the school year and the beautiful weather this week has allowed many of our students and teachers to extend their learning environments to outdoor spaces on our school campus.

I wanted to call your attention to a few important events that will be taking place in the Franklin community next week. Please mark your calendars for two events on Wednesday, April 20.

The Chantilly Pyramid Art Show will be take place at Chantilly HS from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. We would love for you all to join us at this fun-filled event showcasing all of the talented students within the Chantilly community. There will also be a raffle, a Make it/Take it Art Experience for elementary-age students, and several food trucks. We hope to see you there.

We will also be recognizing the Month of the Military Child next week with a Purple Up Day on Wednesday, April 20. FCPS is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience. I grew up in a military home and on behalf of our entire staff, I would like to take the opportunity to recognize our military-connected youth and families for their service and contribution to our community.

I always encourage you to reach out to me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu if there is anything our team can do to support your student. Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Month of the Military Child

Purple Up! Day - Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child. To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 20 for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue. Learn more about Month of the Military Child and FCPS’ resources for military families.

Library Updates

April is Poetry Month and a poem-a-day from our library collection will be posted in the Library Schoology course each school day. Please contact Sheri Ruffle for more poetry!

COVID-19 Testing Update

FCPS has been providing a COVID-19 screening and diagnostic testing program to students and staff as part of its layered prevention strategies to limit the spread of COVID-19. FCPS will discontinue the following prevention strategies on April 22, 2022:

  • Optional weekly screening testing for all schools
  • Diagnostic testing for symptomatic students and staff at FCPS drive-through sites

Our last day for screening testing here at Franklin MS will be April 20. If students or employees have symptoms and need to get tested, the following options are available:

  • COVID-19 Testing - Fairfax County Health Department offers COVID-19 testing at various sites throughout the county.
  • At-Home Test Kits - Students leaving the school CARE Room with symptoms of illness are provided an at-home test kit.
  • Test-To-Stay Program - In partnership with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), FCPS is providing access to the Test-To-Stay program for students who have been identified as a close contact when an outbreak has been declared. This program is available to any student who meets eligibility criteria and whose parent/legal guardian has provided consent for their participation.

While we are encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases in our community, we are also committed to keeping our schools safe for all to learn and work in person. Please continue to do your part to maintain a healthy learning environment by using prevention strategies including hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, monitoring for illness, and staying home when sick.

Franklin MS After School Program

The schedule for April 18 - April 22 can be found here. Does your child love to bake and decorate? If so, they should attend the Cupcake Wars interest meeting on Wednesday, April 20 during first block with Ms. Jeffry and Ms. Spencer.

Late Bus Update - there will be a 4th late bus day added to the schedule. All FCPS Middle School After School Programs were awarded ESSER Grant funding. A portion of this grant will fund an additional late bus day. The 4th day of late buses will start on Tuesday, April 26. As a general reminder, many of our clubs are “open enrollment” meaning students are welcome to start attending whenever they are ready. Our late bus days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with parent pick up on Tuesdays and Fridays. For questions regarding the After School Program, please email Mrs. Mollé. The last day for all after school programs and late buses will be on Thursday, May 26.

Lost and Found

We have accumulated many misplaced items. Please encourage your student to check for their lost items in the lost and found area in the cafeteria. At the end of the school day on Friday, April 22 any remaining items will be donated to a local charitable organization.
