Artist, Raman Singh, has begun our community mural! Final reveal and celebration is Wednesday, May 4th at 5:00 p.m.

Note from Dr. Sheers

Hard to believe we are in our fourth quarter of school! Before we know it, we will be packing up and wishing you a wonderful summer! Lots of activities will be occurring between now and the end of the school year. Please review your child's newsletters and the Mustang Memo thoroughly so you don't miss out on anything!

Next week we are celebrating the Month of the Military Child. See below for more information and ways for you to participate.

On Friday, April 29, please join us to celebrate our students with Autism by wearing blue. Blue represents the color for Autism Awareness. Let's show our support and Mustang pride by wearing anything blue to acknowledge our many Mustangs with Autism.

News and Notes

The WSES Scholastic Spring Book Fair is Coming!
The Spring Book Fair will be held in the Library from Monday, April 18th – Friday, April 22nd.  Each class will be scheduled for a visit to the Fair during their normal library class time.  Please feel free to join your child’s class for his or her Book Fair visit.  In addition to scheduled class visits, the Bok Fair will be open on Wednesday from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Book Fair flyers will be going home in Thursday packets this week.  If you would like to take advantage of eWallet you can set it up for your student(s) here

Each year I count on volunteers to help run the fair. We need assistance on Friday, April 15 after school to set up the Fair and on the 22 to pack it all up.  In addition to those two dates, it is extremely helpful to have weekday volunteers to answer the kids' questions (i.e. how much does this book cost), tidy up, and help our youngest students create wish lists to bring home.

If you are interested in volunteering please click up our sign up link here (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050c4ba5ae2ba0f94-west

If you have any questions, please email Ms. Stevenson at aastevenson@fcps.edu

Month of the Military Child

KIT

In April, we will be celebrating Month of the Military Child to recognize the military connected students at WSES.  Below are some opportunities to participate:

  • Picture of your family:  Send in a picture of your military connected family to be featured on the WSES news show.  If you sent a picture in last year, we could use the same picture- let us know!
  • Students to speak on the news show:  Looking for military connected students who are interested in speaking on the news show about their experience of being part of a military family.  We can work with the students on what they may want to say!
  • Help with decorating:  Need 4th, 5th, and 6th grade volunteers to help with decorations for Purple Up Day on April 20.  Students do not need to be military connected to help with this.
  • Show your spirit on April 20:  Any interested/available military parents are encouraged to dress in their uniform on Purple Up Day (Wednesday, April 20) to walk their child up to school (all WSES students encouraged to wear purple that day).

Please direct submissions and questions to our Military Counselor, Kristen Mahoney:  kmahoney@fcps.edu or 202-725-7018.  Deadline for submissions/volunteers is March 31, 2022.

Positivity Project

Positivity Project - Week of April 11

This week’s character strength is Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence - Appreciating excellence and beauty helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around him/her. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside his/her head. And, not only is the individual outwardly focused, but often deeply absorbed in a sense of awe or admiration, freeing him/her to forget anxieties or troubles. People with this character strength are not looking to criticize the world or its people, but instead take pleasure from their excellence. Find out more about Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence by watching this video. Next character strength:  OPM – Identifying & appreciating the good in others
