Next week, students will be focusing on appreciating beauty and excellence. 

Appreciation of beauty and excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. You notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. You don’t take things for granted.

Girl Scout Project

I am a girl scout junior trying to earn my bronze award, which is the highest award a girl scout junior can earn. I have to plan and carry out a take action project to earn the award. The project that I have chosen is an art supply drive. I’m collecting supplies to make kits for kids at the Fairfax Domestic Violence Shelter. 

My inspiration for this project was I was reading a book where a girl and her friends decided to do a school supply drive by filling backpacks with school supplies. I wanted to do something like that but I wanted something I could do by myself. The reason I chose this shelter was because I wanted to give these kids something all their own because they might not have a lot.  My goal is to make at least 50 kits. 

  The supplies I’m looking for are:

• Plastic Pencil Boxes
• Boxes of pencils (unsharpened or sharpened)
• 3x5 or 4x4 blank (unlined) notebooks
• Erasers
• Boxes of 24 crayons
• 12 count colored pencils boxes

AUTISM AWARENESS WEEK AT OES!!

 April 18 - April 22, 2022

We are proud to announce that OES will be observing Autism Awareness Week from   April 18^th – April 22^nd!  This annual event reminds us that all students play a vital role in our school’s community and should be appreciated and respected.  We are excited to show our support, and THIS IS HOW!

With a Special Video Message from Paws – Check out how our favorite panther is getting ready for this important week at OES: YouTube message from Paws!

On PTV – The Student Council Association will be sharing facts about autism during Panther TV morning announcements to help educate and inform students.

In Morning Meetings – Classes will discuss the topic and participate in a fun Autism Awareness art activity.

On Facebook – Stay tuned to our PTA's Facebook Page!  We will be sharing various facts about autism to help promote the awareness, acceptance and understanding of our students, as well as the tens of thousands of individuals living with an autism diagnosis each year.

With a Special Reading List – Our librarian has created a special reading list of books that treat many aspects of the topic of autism. It is our hope that students and families will read and reference these books to learn more about what it's like for an individual to live with autism, (or to know someone who does); and that, in turn, such knowledge will foster acceptance, empathy and compassion.  CLICK HERE to view our selection of books and print a copy.

April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize and thank children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. The nationwide commemoration was established in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger.

Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. 

To show our support, we are inviting all OES students and staff to “Purple Up!” anytime in the month of April.
