Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We finished 3rd Quarter on a high note with 241 7th graders and 234 8th graders attaining Honor Roll with either all A report cards or all A’s and B’s.  We will recognize them on April 25th with a special Connections class and a treat in the cafeteria.

We are also off to a strong start for 4th Quarter.  Students set an academic or personal goal for these last 9 weeks of school in Connections class.  Do inquire as to what they are proud of and how they will capitalize on that for a strong finish.  The end of the school year moves more quickly than the other three it seems.  We appreciate your support for all of our events and activities.  Please limit appointments and absences as you are able so that we can finish strong as a community!

Principal, Langston Hughes MS

Hughes Community and students,

Do you have a favorite teacher whom you feel deserves to be recognized? If so, here’s the perfect opportunity to do so.

This year, Northern Virginia magazine is launching its first annual Teacher of the Year Award, in which they will recognize the very best educators in our region.

The staff at Northern Virginia magazine want to make sure deserving teachers don’t miss out on the opportunity to be honored for the hard work they put in this school year.

The winner of Teacher of the Year will be awarded $10,000 and be profiled in the cover story in the October 2022 issue of Northern Virginia magazine, which will also appear on northernvirginiamag.com. Finalists will also be featured in the story.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominees must be full-time teachers in grades K through 12 in an accredited school, either public or private, in one of the following jurisdictions: Arlington County, Fairfax County, Fauquier County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, Stafford County, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. Educators must have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience. They will be judged on their knowledge of subject matter and proven ability to inspire students to learn, demonstrate leadership within their school and community, and develop cooperative relationships with parents.

Each nominee must be serving as a teacher for the 2021–2022 school year.

NOMINATION PROCESS

Anyone may submit a nomination for a great teacher—principals, assistant principals, other administrators, school employees, fellow teachers, students, former students, parents, or the general public. Teachers may not nominate themselves. Nominations may be submitted at NorthernVirginiaMag.com/TeacherOfTheYear. You will be asked to name a teacher and his or her school and county, and include a short statement explaining why your nominee deserves to be named Teacher of the Year.

DEADLINE (APRIL 24, 2022)

All nominations must be submitted at NorthernVirginiaMag.com/TeacherOfTheYear by April 24, 2022

2022-2023 Course Requests for Rising 8th Grade Students

Your child’s course requests for the 2022-23 school year are available for review on the ParentVUE and StudentVue websites.  Click here to log on to ParentVUE and select the ‘Course Requests’ tab, located on the left-hand side of the screen, to view course requests. (Please note that the course requests tab cannot be accessed through the app.)

This is not a guarantee of placement in elective courses.  Changes may be made over the summer based on course enrollment, staffing, scheduling constraints, or academic needs. If you would like to request a change, please email Michele Beard, Director of Student Services, at mbeard@fcps.edu  as soon as possible and no later than Friday, April 15th at 4:00 pm. The following courses are full, and students cannot be added: Art Foundations, Art Extensions, 3D Art, and FACS 1 and 2.

When reviewing your child’s course requests, you should look for the following courses listed:

  • English
  • Civics
  • Invest Mat/Ener (Science)
  • Math (course will vary)
  • Health & PE 8
    • This is listed twice, as we schedule all students into two semester-long sections.
  • Electives

You should see either TWO year-long elective courses, ONE year-long elective course and TWO semester elective courses, or FOUR semester elective courses.

If all courses are not listed, it is likely that we did not receive your child’s course selection sheet. Please email Michele Beard at mbeard@fcps.edu as soon as possible.

  • Placement in elective courses is based on course requests and course availability.  We make every effort to give students their top choices, but sometimes students are placed into alternate choices due to enrollment and/or staffing or student academic needs.
  • If your child selected a year-long music class - Band, Chorus, or Orchestra – we will reach out to you to schedule an audition for placement.
  • If you child will take German or Japanese at South Lakes High School, please remember that transportation home from South Lakes for bus riders is only available to students in the South Lakes boundaries.
  • Electives slots may also be replaced at a later time due to a student’s academic needs. Grades, assessment data, language proficiency level, and areas of service for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) may be considered when determining if a support class is needed. We will communicate with you if your student needs an academic support class in place of an elective.

  • English - Inglés
  • Civics - Educación Cívica
  • Invest Mat/Ener (Ciencia)

Main Office Updates

It’s spring again, which means rain, flowers … and end of the school year stress! How can you encourage and support your student to finish STRONG?  Send them a FINISH STRONG gift bag! For $6, we will deliver a bag full of motivational items – sweets, fidgets, snacks, etc. – directly to them in their Connections classroom. Purchase your bag using the MySchoolBucks app. (Please do not send money to the school, as it may get misrouted!) Feeling generous? Purchase more than one bag, then contact Kristina Burke to let her know it is for a donation. LHMS teachers will nominate students they think should receive one. The money raised will help fund our AVID college readiness program.  Questions? Contact Mrs. Burke at  ktburke@fcps.edu.

**If you purchase more than one bag because you have more than one student at LHMS, please contact Mrs. Burke to ensure each student you purchase one for gets one.**
