1.  From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of The Chantilly Community:

Here's the news around Chantilly.

Happy Friday. April is a month of many recognitions, and I would like to take this opportunity to share those happening at Chantilly:

Arab American Heritage Month

Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the diverse perspectives, experiences, and contributions of Arab Americans year-round, and Arab American Heritage Month is one opportunity to honor these important stories. As part of our Charger Connect lessons provided during Advisory, Arab students and staff at CHS put together a lesson to help emphasize the importance and contributions of Arab culture and Arab Americans.

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child. Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools are proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. To show our support, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 20 for military children. Of course, we here at CHS have lots of purple, so we can honor our military children whenever we wear school apparel.

National Autism Awareness Month

The month of April is  National Autism Awareness month.  Many FCPS teachers and staff recognized National Autism Month on Wednesday, April 13.  Please follow FCPS on Instagram @FCPSEmployeeWellness for ways to create awareness.

Thanks and have a good weekend,

Scott

2.  Attendance Information

Attendance notification via our Chantilly HS Website Attendance Forms have seen an uptick in the amount of Attendance Forms being submitted by students.  This form is to be submitted by a PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN ONLY.  Please do NOT let your student submit this form for you.  The form itself has a checkbox stating:  “By submitting this form, you are confirming that you are the parent or legal guardian of the student."

If you need your student to be picked up early, you must allow at least 30 minutes to process your request or you must contact your students sub school and leave a voice mail to the sub school AA to process your request, the earlier in the day the better.  Our Administrative Assistants are working hard to support many students at the same time and they need time to process your requests.  No early releases will be processed if they are less than 10 minutes prior to the end of the day and students will have to wait for the final bell.

3.  ANGP (All Night Grad Party) is back!

After a two year hiatus, The 2022 CHS All Night Grad Party is back and we need your help!

The event will be held from 11 p.m. on June 1st to 5 a.m. on June 2nd.  The link to sign up is below.

This is a fun event for our graduating seniors and we need many people to make it happen. Most of the volunteer needs are at night during the party, but there are a few in the afternoon and early evening.  The numbers in parentheses after the times of the tasks indicate the number of volunteers needed.

All volunteers (except for those working the Casino) will be provided with an ANGP Volunteer T-Shirt to wear the night of the party.

Please make sure to give your t-shirt size when signing up for your shift.  Casino volunteers will be asked to dress in black pants and a white collared shirt.

2022 CHS All Night Grad Party Parent Volunteer Signup

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for this event.  Please help us spread the word and forward the link to other parents who might be willing to volunteer.  It's always more fun to volunteer with friends.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to ANGP.

4.  Volunteers Needed: Honor Flight for Veterans

The Honor Flight Network is a national network of independent Hubs working together to honor our nation's veterans with an all expense paid trip to the memorials in Washington DC. On April 22nd the Centreville Moose Lodge with members of the Chantilly Academy were given the privilege to host 65 veterans of the Armed Forces.

To make this event as seamless and smooth as possible, we need volunteers to assist with dinner and assemble boxes of lunch the next day.

Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you!

Dates: April 22 and April 23

Location:  Centreville Moose Lodge, 3529 Cambridge Rd., Fairfax City

5.  From the PTSA:  Staff Appreciation Week for Chantilly HS starts April 24th

The PTSA would like to show our support for the wonderful Chantilly HS staff. Along with providing lunch and other fun goodies during the week, we will once again have our annual staff appreciation raffle. It is always a BIG hit!!

Every staff member receives an entry. We give away gift cards, themed baskets, vacation rentals, meals, and jewelry from generous donors in our school community. We encourage the contributions to be creative. It would be great if every family could contribute something. There are about 375 staff members!

Please drop off donations marked PTSA in the office before Friday, April 22nd.

Thank you for your support.

Robotics

The Chantilly Robotics Team competed at the FIRST Chesapeake District Championships last weekend in Hampton, Virginia with their robot, Phoenix. Not having touched, let alone built, a robot in more than 18 months due to the pandemic, their successes are truly commendable. The team "Macarena-ed" through the highs and lows of not only competitions, but the season overall; their spirit remained unwavering. This resulted in multiple achievements: Chantilly Robotics was alliance captain for the first time in 3 years, they completed the first double traversal in the Chesapeake District, and won their 18th Spirit Award— sustaining their record of the longest continuous streak of spirit awards in FRC history. Of course, none of this would have been possible without sponsor, parents, and mentors: THANK YOU!

8.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Adam Elayan is currently earning an A in math. He has shown outstanding attention-to-detail in his work – an important habit in the study of mathematics that often separates outstanding students from good students.  Adam is a great role model for his peers. His attendance is regular and punctual. He is attentive and follows directions. He has a strong work ethic. He is thoughtful, kind, considerate, polite, and respectful. Adam, it is a pleasure to work with you and thank you for being a great role model for your peers.  Mr. Steve Blanchard
  • Ryan Brown is such a hard-working student. He comes in consistently during Charger Time to ask questions and clarify material. During class, Ryan will ask questions and participate with enthusiasm! Ryan's work ethic is paying off, as he did terrific on our last assessment. He is such a great role model for his peers. I wish him the best of luck next year!!  Ms. Karen Fiala
  • Malik Jones has consistently demonstrated excellence in mathematical problem solving the entire year and furthermore has shown outstanding character and work ethic. He has a true talent in mathematics, and he recently got a 100% on a difficult radical equations test.  Mr. Timothy Murphy
  • Daniel Melendez has worked really hard the last month, consistently coming in for extra help during CT as well as after school. He has managed to improve his grade by almost 10 points, which is really hard to do this late in the year, with a rolling gradebook. Keep up the good work Daniel.  Mr. Craig Primus
  • I'm so proud of Sirena Stoddard! Through diligent work and patience over time, she has managed to bring up her grade significantly! She was focused, asked questions, did her work, studied and made tremendous progress!  Ms. Debbie Kim
