Glasgow Community Gazette - April 10

Powell

Greetings!

I hope everyone's Spring Break was peaceful and restful! I had a restful time and enjoyed celebrating my birthday with family and friends. We are at the start of the 4th quarter and we are very excited to finish strong for the 2022-23SY. Before the break, we started with a Social and Emotional strategy during our Panther Time for targeted classes. This strategy is a partnership with the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program. Please see the images below. Our students are not riding the horses but are interacting with the horses. We are excited for this new program!

If you haven’t already, please take FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey today! Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students. Survey topics include:

   o Welcoming environment

   o Communication

   o Student success

   o Advocacy

   o Family and school partnerships

o Collaboration with the community to see if FCPS is meeting its goals at the     school, region, and division levels

The survey is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Amharic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, and Vietnamese. Participate today by clicking on the QR code below or visit the survey website

Lastly, a reminder that all FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost. Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email soon that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

For additional information, visit our online tutoring services website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Important Information

3rd Quarter Report Cards, SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE Access: Third quarter report cards will go home with students in Panther Time on Tuesday, April 26. Due to grade preparation for third quarter marks, SIS will be unavailable to all FCPS parents and students from Thurs, Mar 31, 2022 @ 4pm until Sat, Apr 16, 2022 at 6am.

Ramadan: This year Ramadan begins at sunset the evening of April 2 and ends at sunset the evening of May 1, 2022. During this time, many of our Muslim students may be fasting. Students who are fasting and wish to stay at an alternate location during lunch may ask for a pass out of the cafeteria. Because librarians may be teaching classes, students going to the library during their lunch block will be expected to self-monitor their conduct and meet all expectations for behavior.

Justice Volleyball Visiting Glasgow: The Justice Wolves’ Volleyball team wrapped a historic fall 2021 season with a National District championship and its best finish and deepest postseason run since the program’s start in 2003. Our athletes persevered through all the pandemic limitations, changes, and setbacks to produce a committed and cohesive roster. The Wolves earned the runner-up trophy in the Region 6 and qualified for the State tournament, finishing 4 in the state. The team’s success came with the leadership of seven seniors and a host of talented underclassmen. Coach Ponton, head varsity coach, will be visiting Glasgow during all lunches on April 20 to answer questions and hand out information to anyone that is interested.

Tutor.com Opt Out: Students will be able to access Tutor.com through a link in Schoology beginning mid-April, 2022. Your student will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless you submit an opt-out request. If you do not want your student to have access to this online tutoring resource, complete the opt-out via ParentVUE by April 11, 2022.  Directions for opting out can be found on the Online Tutoring Services website. If you are unable to opt-out via ParentVUE, submit the hard copy form that will be sent home by your school. You may also opt your student out of Tutor.com tutoring service at a later date via ParentVUE or by submitting a request to your student's school.

Lightspeed Parent Report Request: FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our website.

Academic Advising: Academic Advising is now complete for Glasgow students. For parents of rising 7th and 8th grade students, log in to your ParentVUE account to view your child’s course requests. Rising 6th grade students will have their courses uploaded in the coming weeks once feeder elementary schools are finished with course selections. If you would like to make any changes to your child’s course requests, please contact your child’s school counselor by Friday, April 15th.

Hoop It Up Night is Back: Mark your Calendars! Friday April 22, 2022, 6-9 PM at Glasgow. Featuring the GMS Panther Band; Art from Art Students; Food and Spirit Wear for sale; …and the MAIN EVENT:

Afterschool Updates

Congratulations to the Science Olympiad Team!  Wow, Glasgow did so well at our first state competition at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA on Saturday, March 26. . We are so proud of their hard work and achievements.  Glasgow won medals in three state events, and had two additional top 10 finishes as follows—well done:

  • Bridges:  3rd place medal.  Laura Prudius and Diana Prudius
  • Electric Wright Stuff:  3rd place medal.  Amanuel Gebremeskel and Aaron Naidan
  • Sounds of Music:  5th place medal.  Laura Prudius and Gavin Tilock
  • Meteorology: 8th place.  Clinton Morimoto and Gabriel Cervoni
  • Crave the Wave:  10th place. Laura Prudius and Gabriel Cervoni

Everyone should be very proud of their effort this year.  We never would have gotten this far without the whole team pitching in and showing up for tests/events where the team needed coverage.  Special thanks go to those folks who covered tests at regionals ‘for the good of the team’, and to our three newest team members who jumped right in for the State Tournament:  Clinton, Gabriel, and Angiza.

Our current President is eligible to stay on, but we are seeking candidates for Treasurer, Secretary, VP of School Programs, VP of Organization/Outreach and VP of Communications. All terms are 1 year, and the workload is very manageable. Serving on the PTA is a great way to be connected to Glasgow and give back to the community. Contact the PTA for descriptions of the positions or to self-nominate.
