April 15, 2022

Dear Fairfax Family,

As we close out this week, it’s important to take a moment to recognize the impact the loss of a child has on our school and community.  I want to thank our clinical and counseling department along with the county crisis team who supported our staff and students this week. Grief comes in many forms and can show up at different times. I am including some information below that may be helpful to you in discussing a death with your child.  Counselors and clinicians continued to meet with students individually and in groups this week and will continue in the days ahead.  Should you feel your child needs additional assistance, please reach out to your child’s school counselor.  Note that children who already have suffered previous losses, may need additional outside support.  If you or your child need help right away, anyone can text "CONNECT" to 855-11 or call 703-527-4077, any time 24/7 for free through the Fairfax County CrisisLink Hotline. Tips-for-Grieving-Teens.pdf

Below are important announcements and celebrations. Please remember to review the NYC’s Table of Contents to navigate to even more information and events in our community.

Hold the date for PROM!  It is Saturday evening, May 14th at the State Theatre in Falls Church starting at 8 PM. Tickets go on sale next week and can be  purchased during all lunches or through MySchoolBucks.Ticket prices start at $65.00 and will increase after April 29. The theme this year is Great Gatsby!

I am pleased to announce that students now have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Tutor.com is available 24/7, through online voice or text chat, and in your student’s preferred language. Student participation is optional and parents/guardians can opt their students out of accessing the service. You can learn more about Tutor.com on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services website.

Students will be able to access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology.  Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is provided to families via the following instructional videos: secondary video. Questions not answered in the posted resources may be sent to onlinetutoring@fcps.edu.

This new service will help many FHS students complete assignments, better understand classroom lessons, and be successful.

Congratulations to Angelina Tran! Angelina competed in the Future Business Leaders of America state competition and placed FIRST in the Business Calculations event that had over 60 competitors from across the state.  Angelina now has the opportunity to go to compete in the National FBLA Competition this June in Chicago.

I am very proud to announce that the FHS Winter Drumline ensemble placed SECOND in their class across the entire state with a season-high score of 80.875! This was less than 2.3 points outside of a first place finish. We are also proud to announce that our Winter Guard placed 5th in their class at the AIA North Championships. They improved their previous score, finishing less than 2 points outside of first place!

Congratulations to our 6-0 boys tennis team who defeated Robinson and West Springfield this week. Freshman Venki Srinivasan and Senior Neal Love remain undefeated in singles and Venki and Iden Ziamanesh remain undefeated in doubles. The team clinched the West Springfield win almost simultaneously with two doubles wins by Venki and Iden at number 1 doubles and by Matthew Chinnaraj and Ethan Doan at number 3 doubles. Also a huge shout out to our girls soccer team who celebrated their seniors last night. The team played WT Woodson to a 3-3 tie and the Lions remain undefeated with a 5-0-1 record.

It looks like we have a nice weather-weekend ahead, so I hope you have some time set aside to get outside with your family and friends!

Best Regards,

Student Services is hosting our annual Wellness Week. During the week, students have an opportunity to participate in various activities such as yoga, walking the track, playing with therapy dogs, calming coloring, and other fun activities the Leadership class will offer during all lunches! The week promotes emotional, mental and physical wellness, as well as provides an opportunity to find joy! A summary of events and the ability for students to sign up for activities can be viewed on the Student Services Schoology page and was also emailed directly to all students on their fcpsschools.net email accounts.

  • Seniors: Cap & Gown Info
Graduation packages, including cap and gown orders, will be available for distribution at the end of April during all lunches. If you or your student did not purchase a cap and gown directly through Jostens.com, don’t stress! FHS placed a large order of extras to ensure every student has a cap and gown available to them on graduation day. These extras will be available for students to purchase during distribution week for the cost of $31.

April is the Month of the Military Child

Military Child Month

April is the Month of the Military Child! For the month of April, we are celebrating our military-connected children and their service as part of a military family. Children of military members often experience frequent moves and numerous deployments by their parents during their K-12 educational years. Approximately 2 million military children have experienced parental deployment since 9/11 nationwide. Military families also typically move three times more often than civilian families. Children of military members also live with the special challenge and understanding that their parents are frequently required to perform in high-risk situations, often for lengthy periods of time, far from home. We are excited at FHS to provide an opportunity to recognize and honor the service of over 100 military-connected children, both students, and staff this month.

See below for our Spirit Days throughout the month:

Monday (4/11), Camo Day

Friday (4/15), USA out
(Red, White & Blue Day)

Monday (4/18), Pajama Day
(We sleep soundly because of those who protect our nation)

Wednesday (4/20), Purple Up! Day
(Purple indicates support for all branches of the military: Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard)

Friday (4/29), Red Day
(Remember Everyone Deployed)

We want to recognize all of our military children at Fairfax High School and encourage you to complete this form if you would like your student recognized during the month. Please fill out the form by April 18th so we can recognize you! Contact Jenny Payne for more info at japayne2@fcps.edu.

FHS Leadership will be selling Purple Up! t-shirts for $10 during school lunches on April 18 and 19.

FCPS is hosting a series of events during the week of April 18-22 including school board recognition on April 20th, mini-documentaries of military kids in the district, and district-wide spirit days. https://www.fcps.edu/node/45557

Big Season for Drumline & Winter Guard!

FHS Drumline and Guard

We are very proud to announce that the FHS Winter Drumline ensemble placed SECOND in their class across the entire state with a season-high score of 80.875! This was less than 2.3 points outside of a first place finish.

With a group composed of mainly non-percussionists and very few vets, this is a wonderful finish for the hours of sweat, effort and toil.

Meanwhile, we are also proud to announce that our Winter Guard placed 5th in their class at the AIA North Championships! They improved their previous score by a whopping 34 points, finishing less than 2 points outside of first place. We could not ask more from a group that hasn't competed since the 2014 season.

CONGRATULATIONS to our Drumline and Winter Guard students! Well done!
