Happy Spring Break!

All staff and students will be taking a break from work next week - there are no assignments given next week. When students return, there will not be any assessments the first 2 days after break. We hope you enjoy break and take time to rest and rejuvenate. We look forward to seeing all our students back on Monday, April 11, to kickoff the 4th quarter. Due to a gas line replacement, our building will be closed over spring break.

Updated SOL Testing

Our SOL schedule for May has been further improved to minimize disruptions to classroom instruction.

  • On Thursday, May 5, eighth graders will take the Science SOL. Our schedule for the day will be Periods: 3, 1, 5, then 7.
  • On Monday, May 9, ALL students will take the Reading SOL in the morning. We will have testing at the start of the day and then follow with periods 7, 5, then 1.
  • On Friday, May 13, ALL students will take the Math SOL in the morning. As this is often the longest test, we will likely need to extend 5th period for lunches and shorten 7th period slightly at the end of the day.

Intentions for Next Year

If your child will NOT be attending Irving or his/her base high school next year, please complete the Intention Form linked below and return it to hbnguyen@fcps.edu to let us know where your child will be enrolled. If your child is going to Irving or his/her base high school, you don’t need to complete this form. If you find out later you will be moving, please contact Irving so we can update our database.    https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/it110.pdf

Family Engagement Survey

Our Family Engagement Survey 2021-22 should have been emailed to you on Sunday, March 13. So please participate! Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

You have the ability to take the survey electronically or by paper copy and submit it by the deadline of April 3, 2022. Nine language translations of the survey are available, including Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. You are able to complete the survey on most electronic devices, including smartphones. We encourage you to use the link sent to your email account first, where able. If you do not have an email address you may access the survey and directly select the desired language at:

Family Engagement Survey

Or paper copies are available to you if needed, and can be requested from the Family Liaison: djrolls@fcps.edu

Cyber Safety Part 5

Throughout the month of March in ROCK Block, we have been taking a few minutes to look at different ways we can stay safe in the cyber world. This week we looked at online gaming safety. Check out the tip card for important tips you can discuss as a family, including:

  • avoiding the use of usernames (gamertags) that give information about you away to others.
  • not saying or typing personal information in case someone you are gaming with is streaming or recording the game.

Student Laptop Chargers

It is important that students charge laptops each night. For students who need to purchase a replacement charger, the cost is $23. Chargers can be purchased two ways:

  1. Go to MySchoolBucks and pay for one online and then pick it up from the Tech Office the next day.
  2. Send a check made out to Irving MS with your student to school. They will take it to the Tech Office in the morning and pick up a replacement at the same time.

Library News

Irving families:  We hope that you all take time over Spring Break to read.  We’ve encouraged students to borrow a good book to enjoy next week.  If they’ll be on the move and don’t have a physical book to take, remember that they can always access something to read through MackinVIA is FCPS’s digital library of eBooks and audiobooks. Ask your student about it.  (http://www.mackinvia.com)

Readers Unite Book Club has completed nine books this school year.  We continue to meet on Mondays after school.  Any students with an interest in reading should drop by the library to express interest and stay after for the first-hour meeting time on Mondays.
