April is Month of the Military Child

mc

Each year, our nation designates April as the Month of the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle.  The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986.  During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids” and all are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth (MCY).  Why purple?  Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.  This year, Purple Up! Day is April 20.

FCPS and Ravensworth is proud to recognize all military-connected children this April during Month of the Military Child. Each year we join our country in celebrating the resiliency of military-connected children for their tremendous service and sacrifice at home in the U.S. and overseas.

Standards of Learning (SOL)

SOLs are coming soon (see schedule below). it is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time-period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.

More Information about the SOLs can be found by following the link.  https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/sol-assessments

If you have questions about the SOLs please feel free to contact your children’s teacher or one of our Test Coordinators: Patrick Bourjaily and Melissa Keller.

Arrival and Dismissal

Several of our neighbors have reached out about our families blocking their driveways with their cars during arrival and dismissal.  Please be mindful of where you park when coming to the school.  The safest way to drop off and pick up your child from school is through our Kiss and Ride.  Thank you for your support.

Lost and Found

We are starting to prepare for the 2022-23 academic year. Children who will be five (5) years old on or before September 30, 2022, are eligible to attend kindergarten next fall. If you have a child who will attend kindergarten at Ravensworth next school year, and you have not already been in contact with our registrar, Teresa Dunbar, please complete this survey and return it to the school via email to: tldunbar1@fcps.edu

Please spread the word to your neighbors who don’t already have a child at Ravensworth. Feel free to pass this form along or have neighbors with rising kindergarteners call the office at 703-426-3600 to be added to our kindergarten mailing list. Registration information will be provided to all families who complete and return this survey. If preferred, you may request a mailed packet of registration forms by calling the office or emailing our registrar.

A child’s record of immunization, physical examination (within 12 months prior to entering kindergarten), proof of residency, and original birth certificate must be submitted when registering the child.  For more information regarding kindergarten registration, you may visit the Fairfax County Public Schools’ website at   https://www.fcps.edu/registration/general-registration-requirements

Positivity Project

hu

Humor can have a dark side, depending on how it’s used. Some humor is mean-spirited and bullying. The strength of humor that the character strength focuses on is that which raises the spirits of other people.

For individuals, humor has important health benefits, both mental and physical. Humor stretches the mind to look at things from different perspectives, keeping people mentally agile and alert. Making people laugh also produces positive emotions and happiness for the initiator. And, when people are on the receiving end of humor, they also receive many benefits. Scientists have shown that laughter reduces stress, promotes connection with other people, and can even improve focus. Laughter is contagious and bonds us to other people.
