March 31, 2022
Dear Fairfax Family,
Happy Thursday, and we made it to Spring Break! Today also marks the end of the 3rd quarter for our students, so I hope that we all find some time to step away from school and relax. As per the usual, during Spring Break, most of our staff will not be available and are off contract, and many of the remaining staff have taken leave. Our main office will be closed, and I ask that our community be patient with emails: We will work to catch up and respond as quickly as possible once we return.
Yesterday the PTSA hosted a fantastic staff appreciation luncheon. The thoughtfulness and care which went into every detail were not lost on anyone. The carefully curated gift baskets, the delicious food truck options, the personalized mugs and the many raffles were received gratefully by all. A big thank you for all the PTSA and its members do for Fairfax HS!
Last night we inducted close to one hundred students into the National Honor Society. It was so wonderful to come together in person to celebrate these amazing students who have demonstrated a commitment to scholarship, leadership, service, and character. A big thank you to the NHS sponsors, Candice Tenerelli and Amber Beaudoin for all their efforts in ensuring a wonderful event for our students.
Congratulations to our Science Olympiad team for their 4th place finish out of the top 24 teams at the State Tournament held at the University of Virginia last weekend.
Special congratulations to our medal winners:
1st place: Wright Stuff – Emily Jiang and Stephanie Tai
2nd place: Diseases – Dominic Kim and Beatrice Stotz
2nd place: Ornithology – Janae Robinson and Stephanie Tai
2nd place: Forensic Science – Dominic Kim and Stephanie Tai
2nd place: Bridge – Emily Jiang and William Park
2nd place: Ping Pong Parachute – Will Koeppen and William Park
3rd place: It’s About Time – Will Koeppen and Devyn Hopkins
3rd place: Wifi Lab – Will Koeppen and Dominic Kim
3rd place: Gravity Vehicle – Will Koeppen and David Cheng
4th place: Codebusters – Devyn Hopkins, Rohan Soma, and David Cheng
5th place: Cell Bio – Beatrice Stotz and William Park
5th place: Anatomy – Beatrice Stotz and Colleen Duggar
6th place: Trajectory – Omer Uslu and David Cheng
I wish you all a restful and fun spring break!
Best Regards,
As a reminder, students will be dismissed two hours early on Thursday, March 31, the last day of the third quarter. Friday, April 1, is a teacher workday and a holiday for students. April 4-8 is spring break. Schools and offices will be closed. See the complete 2021-22 school year calendar.

April is the Month of the Military Child
April is the Month of the Military Child! For the month of April, we are celebrating our military-connected children and their service as part of a military family. Children of military members often experience frequent moves and numerous deployments by their parents during their K-12 educational years. Approximately 2 million military children have experienced parental deployment since 9/11 nationwide. Military families also typically move three times more often than civilian families. Children of military members also live with the special challenge and understanding that their parents are frequently required to perform in high-risk situations, often for lengthy periods of time, far from home. We are excited at FHS to provide an opportunity to recognize and honor the service of over 100 military-connected children, both students, and staff this month.
See below for our Spirit Days throughout the month:
Monday (4/11), Camo Day
Friday (4/15), USA out (Red, White & Blue Day)
Monday (4/18), Pajama Day (We sleep soundly because of those who protect our nation)
Wednesday (4/20), Purple Up! Day (Purple indicates support for all branches of the military: Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard)
Friday (4/29), Red Day (Remember Everyone Deployed)
We want to recognize all of our military children at Fairfax High School and encourage you to complete this form if you would like your student recognized during the month. Please email no later than April 14th.
FHS Leadership will be selling Purple Up! t-shirts through Gray day lunches on April 12, 14, and 18th for $10.
FCPS is hosting a series of events during the week of April 18-22 including school board recognition on April 20th, mini-documentaries of military kids in the district, and district-wide spirit days.

Online Tutoring for Students - Coming Soon!
All FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to safe online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Funds to support Tutor.com for school year 2022-23 and 2023-24 will come from an ESSER III Unfinished Learning Grant.
Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring services are available before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends. Tutoring will be accessed online through a link in Schoology. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice and/or text chat.
All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.
Student participation is optional and parents/guardians can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. More information is available on the online tutoring services website. View this YouTube video for more information.
