Ramadan

A Note About Ramadan for Our Poplar Tree Families

We understand that April 2 - May 1 is Ramadan, one of the holiest times on the Islamic calendar.  If your child needs an alternative space for lunch or prayer during this time, we will accommodate them.

Please email your child's school counselor and they will make arrangements:  Mrs. Hirsch (Grades 2,3,4- swhirsch@fcps.edu ) or Ms. Mertens (Grades K, 1, 5 and 6- eemertens@fcps.edu ).

Assessment Information

Spring iReady Assessment Grades 1-6

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted iReady as an academic universal screener for use with all elementary school students in grades 1 through 6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on iReady results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. An example of an additional diagnostic assessment is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The iReady reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary grade students.

iReady assessments will be given to all students in Grades 1-6 at Poplar Tree this spring within the following testing window: April 12-May 20 Grades 1 & 2 and April 12- June 9 Grades 3-6

For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher.  Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at the iReady Universal Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/us). If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or Carol Larsen, Assistant Principal/Test Coordinator (calarsen@fcps.edu)

Kindergarten VKRP Spring Testing

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) assessments provide actionable information that will assist teachers, school leaders, and parents/guardians in supporting student success in school and to better understand school readiness skills across the state of Virginia. This spring, all kindergarteners will participate in the three assessment components of the VKRP, which measure literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program Parent Notification webpage.  Testing will be conducted between April 12 and May 20.  If you have questions about the assessment or the specific assessment dates for your child, please contact your child’s teacher.

Light the Night

Light the Night Campaign

From April 11-April 29, our school will be participating in the Light the Night campaign, formerly known as Hero Squad and Pennies for Patients. Our school goal this year is to raise $7500. We are so excited to be able to raise money to help find a cure for Blood Cancer and to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. This year, our campaign will be 100% virtual. In order to donate, please do one of the following:

  1. Donate on our school’s online donation page at https://pages.lls.org/ltn/nca/NorthVA21/poplarelementaryschool
  2. Donate on your child’s classroom donation page. Check in with your child’s classroom teacher for more information and their specific link.
  3. We encourage you to share these links with family members, community members, and through social media to help us raise as much money as possible.

This year, we are doing a grade level competition at Poplar Tree. The grade level that donates the most money will have some brave teachers complete a dare voted on by students. So, help us raise money to see some of Poplar Tree’s teachers dump slime over their head, get turned into a human sundae, or maybe even get pied in the face!

Please contact Mrs. Sniffin, SCA teacher sponsor, at smsniffin@fcps.edu if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful cause!

Month of the Military Child

We join the rest of FCPS in celebrating the resilience of our military-connected children during April, the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take this opportunity to celebrate our military-connected children and thank them for their service as part of a military family.

We will be celebrating with a Spirit Week from April 18 - 22!

In addition, we invite our military children to record a Flipgrid video talking about what it means to them to be a military child. We will feature these videos on our Good Morning Poplar Tree news show during the week. To record a video, click HERE! (Password ptesmilitary)
