Mindfulness Mondays
Encourage your student to sign up for Mindfulness Mondays, which happens during A session every Monday. Mindfulness Mondays is an afterschool opportunity that supports students growth in managing stress and being more present in the moment. Topics in Mindfulness Mondays include, but are not limited to, weekly reflection, practicing breathing techniques to refocus the mind and fitness to relieve stress. Students should sign up via the afterschool sign up form that is shared in Schoology and on the After School website.

I am excited to share a new resource that will soon be available to all LJMS students to support learning. All FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.
Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.
All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.
Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email soon that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

Student FCPS Laptop Reminders:
Teachers and families have shared that some students are using a variety of technology tools and applications that are not approved by FCPS and can be distracting in the learning environment. This week we shared with students via Schoology the following reminder:
Gaming, use of Google hangouts, chatting apps, creating additional profiles, and installing add ons to your laptops is a violation of the FCPS Acceptable Use Policy and can result in the loss of your laptop. The use of these items can also result in your laptop not peforming when needed for things like Horizon/eCart and Schoology. Please make sure you are using your FCPS device for school activities only. See Mr. Waldren in the Tech Office if you need assistance.
Please note that FCPS continually blocks specific programs and apps that are reported. However, because of the fast pace at which technology changes, we cannot keep up with all of the strategies that students use to access blocked apps and site. We ask that you talk with your student about using their laptop in accordance with FCPS policies.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.
SEL skills include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The screener will review these skills, as well as students’ relationships, feelings of belonging, feelings about their school environment, and mood. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.
Students in grades 3-12 will be screened in the fall and spring. In these grade levels, students will reflect and report on their own skills and experiences. Screener data will only be accessible to teachers, administrators, and staff with legitimate educational interests. Results will be maintained in secure files and databases accessible only to these individuals. Screener results will be used with other data to inform practices for SEL skill development and mental wellness. Screener data will also help staff plan interventions for students with identified needs. Parents and guardians will receive an individualized report regarding their student’s screener results following each assessment window. School staff will be available to discuss results with families on planned support.
In addition to the SEL screener, students will also be asked a 5 question survey about their growth during the school year in several areas such as: making friends, self-esteem/confidence, organization and stress management.

Did you know that Luther Jackson Middle School PTA has a food pantry on site that supports students and their families who are facing food insecurity? If you are passionate about caring for our kids, we need you on the Food Team! Volunteers can check out our new SignUp Genius to sign up for regular slots picking up donations or working in the pantry. We are also looking for 1 or 2 people who are able to dig in and help with operations such as organizing volunteers, planning funding and food drives, finding grant opportunities, and ensuring the smooth operation of the pantry in general. - Late buses run Monday through Thursday. Friday is pickup only.
- Late buses typically arrive between 4:45 and 5:00, so students could arrive home as late as 5:30 or 5:45. You are also welcome to pick them up any time from after school by 4:45pm.
- Your student's late bus is DIFFERENT than the regular late bus. We will go over late bus assignments with students each day after school.

After-School Signups post weekly on Fridays, and students have until the end of lunch each day to sign up. All students who want to participate need to sign up each week!
